I understand that sometimes layoffs are necessary. What I don't understand is why this was not used to get rid of the low performers in the company? Instead, some of the best people were cut. People whose absence will be felt significantly and for a long time. Who does something like that? Can anybody explain this to me?

There are some smart people left... also the people responsible for destroying the mess as well.
Needed to get rid of high salary people to get the most bang from this. They could very well just be setting up the company to be sold.
It is bc this org has been acquiring other companies that are not profitable. Couple this with the fact that they have given away the house as far as their testing goes. Rumor has it that 1 out of every five tests they administer they don’t even bill for. Tough to sustain up that business model, especially when your product is not even an industry leader.
We all knew this would happen. At this scale, and the people let go is baffling.
Obviously it’s keep the lights on mode, but can whoever’s left do that? Loooool
