how is it possible that this place, from a very nice workplace, so quickly became a place that most of us would not recommend to anyone?

There is nothing to really understand. When the founders of the company and older generation running it started to retire so to did integrity, honesty, and a moral compass.
Raymond James is there for one thing and one thing only. This is to make the executives at the top wealthy at the expense of the everyday person that works for them.
Get out while you can.
I know in the back office the culture has shifted. They can’t retain quality employees because the pay sucks and many areas have horrible leadership. Been there 4 years and definitely can tell a difference.
A complete culture change over the last decade or so, with the arrival of Paul Reilly. (Remember work, work, play?) A pandemic. A RIF that destroyed trust in our executives. Continuous erosion of trust since then. Paul making promises that the EC is "looking into" solutions to take care of associates during 40-year high levels of inflation but not following through yet (I'm not holding my breath). The great resignation. The firm not being innovative or competitive when it comes to benefits, flexibility, or pay. Putting all of their money and resources into pleasing our branches while ignoring back office systems. (BOM is just a band aid.) Not standing up to the few squeaky wheels that complain about a supposed decline in service when in reality all the service areas are barely keeping their heads above water and are hemmoraging people and feel like they're constantly being told they're not giving good enough service. Allowing inconsistency across different areas of the firm when it comes to remote work. Punishing everyone for the acts of a few. These are all a good start.
