Thread regarding Saudi Aramco layoffs

Has this happened to anyone else?

Be aware that this can happen. The department that interviews you, and offers you a position, is not always the one that you wind up in once your arrive. Sounds crazy but it happened to me.

Original poster @3omu+1hI76BIM . I hope that there are not many others to whom this has happened.

Currently being transferred to another department means you are now in the list for ELP

It's called passing trash. Nothing new. Managers in all kinds of companies do it with the lousy employees or ones that have no value. If you're being passed around then I guess you now know why.

When it comes to intra company moves, management, not the expat makes the decision. Sometimes the new department talked to the Expat first, sometimes not. I know of a case where an Expat outright quit when he was told about a move. For people joining the company, you can almost be certain that you will not be told about the department change ahead of time. You will just show up and find out that you have been placed somewhere else. This is one of the reasons why all the old timers here keep telling new hires not to bring their families over right away.

LTD is hilarious. Well, some moves could be that way but in most cases is not the reality. It's a complex combination. And all managers are hesitant of transfers because they know are the laziest or problematic. One guy was transferred after crash a pick up parking by example.

It’s a big company. People can be moved around to different departments for operational needs. It’s in the Terms and Conditions of employment. Though the company is good about trying to ensure the move is good for both the new Dept and employee.

Even if you go into the “right” area, there is still a high chance of being pulled into doing all sorts of unrelated (and often menial/soul destroying) work for whichever SVP/VP/manager wants something doing.

Problem is, if you’re good at your job you’ll become their favourite….and then you may as well get “corporate lackey” tattoo on your forehead.

Much of my time is spent writing speeches, letters, doing homework for lazy management or even better, being a timekeeper. It’s a joy.

It happened to me 10 years ago. There is no "my word is my bond" here, it doesn't apply.

It didn't happen to me. I knew people at the department where I was to work, knew what I was going to do and why they needed me.

I did see this happen to others. However, until recently it wasn't common. Things have changed starting about 2019. For example, all the new people hired by a certain department floated within various divisions under the VP who brought them in. When I asked them where they worked, they'd say "I don't know yet". Kind of reminded me of one of those management training programs where employees have to find a home. Eventually, they all did get placed, but if you have a certain job in mind this could be an issue.
