It is awfully American to always pretend everything is a one-man-show.

He left his mark, and earned a change of pace, or company, if it ends up being the case. We're all happy for him.

No one is worried. Every sub team in autopilot is objectively innovating with with industry leading innovation and output. It's not like one man was solely orchestrating the whole of autopilot architecture or committing the code directly lol.

Academia? get real, Andrej is joining a better company. Just not announcing it to avoid Musk's wrath. Remember Musk said engineers who moved from Tesla to Apple are low performers. Check glassdoor or levels.fyi to see how much more Apple pays than Tesla.

Back to his roots in academia and research, he put in like 5 or 6 years. In tesla time that's a lifelong career of accomplishment compared to any other company.

Autopilot are in great hands still. The team is world class, and very much not a one man show.
