Thread regarding VMware layoffs

Plenty of jobs there in the IT sector

Not sure why all of you is so afraid to remain jobless, but in software engineering and IT in general (presales/consultancy ecc) at the moment there are still plenty of opportunities...

I'm based in Europe and I receive daily a lot of requests from Paris, Nice, Berlin, Amsterdam, Barcelona, Lisbon, Switzerland, The Netherlands, Austria hybrid, full remote ecc ecc... it seems like everyone is looking for SWE still.

The only issue I can see if you are now in a village near nowhere and you are not willing to relocate...

As in Europe we have a free university system (there are plenty of engineers) and a more accomodating immigration policies, and a slower economy growth since years, and less famous IT companies/unicorns, I guess in the US should be even better??

The job market is good right now so if you want to leave a job you love at VMware for the unknown of a new landing spot, that is fairly doable now (though less so than 6 months ago). The pain point is, what will the market be like in six months when this deal finally goes through - will it still be easy-ish to find a job? Do you jump ship now just in case the market turns or wait and hope for the best?

Agree with the comment about being in the market after a long run with vmw.

Change effects us at a psychological level. Some have families, may be of age, lack depth in other domains, are facing financial disruption, etc. People need to process what this means for them.

It’s not just about being “scared” or refreshing the resume to get the job tomorrow. This effects is all in very different ways.

Good luck to all of you!

People have been here 5, 7, 10+ years. Changing jobs is terrifying when you haven’t been in the job market since 2010
