Thread regarding VMware layoffs

Highly competitive market

I started looking for a new job a long time ago and so far I haven't had luck passing the interview stage. It's amazing how many people are now applying for certain positions.
I can only imagine how it will become even more competitive in the coming period... Do you think that VMW has any value on the resume?

"No offense, but that sentence is obviously OPs problem because applying like this doesn’t work anymore. "

No Offense taken. But. If you haven't started looking be prepared. A lot of companies have in fact frozen all new hiring. The very first thing I did was to use my network and reach out to people I know. I likewise searched for jobs at all of our competitors as well as other enterprise firms that were appropriate. The result? As stated, most of these companies have stopped hiring. The whole industry is spooked by recession worries. I could have had the job of my choice 6 months ago. Now its is locked up tight.

The bottom line? Be prepared for a possibly long slog on the way to a new job in this environment. If there is a year before the deal closes? Use it. ALL of it. Because you might need that time in order to line something up.

“I have sent out at least 100 resumes and the results so far have been three interviews.”

No offense, but that sentence is obviously OPs problem because applying like this doesn’t work anymore. The return on blasting out a generic resume is poor considering there are candidates writing love letters to HR teams about how working for them is a childhood dream and they’ve planned for this their whole life. So specifically adjust your resume for 5 to 10 quality jobs you want instead of firing 100s of blanks. Networking is good too… still though.. start with a company and role specific resume.

Yes. The market has changed. I started looking as soon as the announcement was made. Something important to keep in mind is that unless your resume is sent to a real person they are all read by robots and so its more difficult to get through those. I have sent out at least 100 resumes and the results so far have been three interviews. Your best bet is to use your network to get past the bots. We may have a year before this deal closes. And for some it may take a year to land a new position. Use this time wisely.

It's not just being from VMware - I talked to recruiters over the last week and they are definitely seeing a drop in postings - by 30% or more. It might just be summer, if jobs are still like this in September then I guess take what you can get.

I can vouch for this. Getting rejected even in the early stages of interviews. Very demotivating

Having VMW on a resume is helpful. It is a respected brand (for now anyway). Most people in the industry know what Broadcom does to a company they acquire, so recruiters and hiring managers will not view it as jumping ship and in some cases, may be impressed with candidates that are taking the initiative now. It is critical to not bash Broadcom in any interview process but simply say that your valued don’t align with theirs and you would rather be proactive rather than reactive or something like that. Every since the news was announced, I received a few calls from recruiters being proactive in contacting me directly. Nothing super interesting yet, but one or two that may have a possibility. Good luck to all.
