How does the official close communicated? is there any prior indication or warning that it's coming up in x days as it gets closer? and if so normally how close to the actual close date? or legally do they just have to wait until the day of and just say welp it's happening today?

Not long, about 5 days I believe. Once all closing conditions are met and the deal is officially closed, the company can’t trade shares on the stock exchange. They need some time to make all that happen, but it usually is 5 days or less notice.
