Thread regarding VMware layoffs

Desperation to get us to quit

Is it just me or is there a serious push on here for everyone to quit their jobs immediately that I am not seeing ANYWHERE else. Not in slack, not in meetings, not on Blind (they’re still DMing job recs and posting their VM offers), not on Glassdoor, not on Twitter. I have seen more celebration posts for taking jobs at VMw in BUs like Tanzu lololol

What’s the trick here then? Why the extremely heavy push for quitting asap under the guise of wisdom and concern. I get warning others but in every post I see long monologues and aggressive wording to quit NOW, don’t wait. Who legitimately cares if the 12 people who visit this space get laid off so much so that every response is to jump ship in order to save yourselves? It’s super suspicious and feels very much like an alternative motive.

Useful non alarmist advice:

  1. Don’t impulse quit yet unless you were wanting to leave anyway
  2. Cut spending as much as possible and build your savings to get you through 60 days
  3. Update your resume and professional profiles
  4. If you haven’t been in the job market for a while, look into a professional re-writing your resume because they know all the keywords to get you through the generic tracking system and more eyes on your application
  5. Make a cover letter! Pay for this too if you must. You can afford it and it’s a game changer
  6. If you are on linkedin start adding and networking with recruiters from the companies you might be interested in going to next
  7. Hit a couple of practice interviews at places you aren’t really interested in to knock the rust off your interviewing techniques
  8. Sit back and see how this plays out with very little worry because you have a plan in place if and when the guillotine starts to come down. Also you get severance.

I dont think there is reason to panic. Dont go taking a role downgrade at a different company but the reality for me is, if I get an offer just as good as VMware, would I have stayed pre acquisition? Yes, now? No. The way I look at it is the longer you stay at a company the more of your career you are investing in the company especially if you work in a product specific role. If you have the time, start applying and interviewing, maybe you’ll land something you are excited about. It’s not panic time but what advice do you want people to give? Dont do anything in the face of perhaps being unemployed come January? Again, dont go setting off any fire alarms yet but it certainly time to make a plan

From my own personal point of view, the moment Broadcom said they would right size the company, I knew it was time to start looking. If I had a meaningful severance amount coming, I wouldn’t leave and would wait it out. I’ve been acquired several times and in the earlier instances the company said “we plan on keeping everyone”. These people said just the opposite, so I knew it was time for me to go. It may not be the right time for everyone else so we all need to do what is best for us. Regardless, I don’t want to work for them, so I am moving on.

It’s not hard to figure out why the loyalists flock to blind, glassdoor etc. This is because they are not anonymous.Anyone who thinks blind is anonymous must be a bit d-mb – they have to send an email to your work address FFS. The kind of “edgy” people that go to glassdoor are probably the OrangeBlock cultists.
In fact this got me thinking. The die hard VCDXrs with blogs and grand titles are the worst of the bunch for having their head in the sands.Don’t listen to them. These types cannot be deprogrammed as they have been led to think that because they go to a conference in PA every year, present at a VMUG that they do important things. They’re dillusional.Mgmt see them as useful id--ts. As Napoleon said “A soldier will fight long and hard for a bit of colored ribbon.” - this is the corporate equivalent.

The sad fact is that this bunch wont have prepared themselves for what’s coming.
