Thread regarding Macy's Inc. layoffs

(Not) answering the survey honestly

I think that only a minimal percentage of people answer the survey honestly.
Do you give honest answers? I don't see any point in being honest, because I don't think I can bring any change for the better, so I always answer what I think the manager would like to hear.

Once upon a time Macy's used a process that didn't require employees to use their employee ID to take an anonymous survey. At the higher levels, any severely realistic and negative feedback from senior leaders would quickly flag and be addressed (even if it is addressed under the guise of something else).

Over the last five years the company has purged talented leaders who would voice their legitimate concerns and keeps advancing leaders who ony want to hear how great they are doing. We benefitted from the pandemic and the closing of competitors but we didn't leverage the opportunity, instead taking short term gains through limited stock, drastically reduced payroll and staffing, knowing that our customers had few choices.

Booming inflation combined with increased stock levels across the industry along with poorly considered and executed programs like ISM make the forecast for the fall season bleak and most colleagues and leader understand what is coming.

This is why the company added the question about why you would leave, in hopes of finding some new bonus program, tuition reimbursement, or plain cash give away that will keep you here through the holiday season. Answer the survey however you want, at the end of the day you still have to come into work at a place where expectations are brutal and half the employees use every sick day, PTO, unavailable day, LOA, and strategy they can to get out of work.

My issue with the survey is that we should also be able to critique the store leader, not just only if you report directly to them. My people leader isn’t the problem. I would like to be able to grade the store manager as well because the direction comes from them.

I like my manager, she ki--s herself to take care of my schedule and always comes when I call her for help. She helped me when I had a family problem and never takes the company BS too literally. She told me that the survey is like 50% of her annual review, I answer the questions with "Strongly Agree" because the company blames her if I tell the truth.

Yes we need a place to be able to insert honest comments. This survey is designed to get the answers they want ahead of time. It's a massive joke.

So there are issues in your store environment but you're going to answer dishonestly to appeal to management who are the likely cause of the poor work conditions?

That makes so much sense

The squeaky wheel gets fired. If you don't answer or answer in any negative way you will be flagged as an insurrectionist.

I stopped answering those surveys two years ago. Before we took the survey we were told that we should answer on how we feel about the total store. Which by the way is always a disaster because of the store leader.

After we took the survey we were then told it should have been answered based on the ASM we reported to.
In that case the answers would have been totally different. The ASM is the only person in management who kept the store together.
Long story short the results of the survey was poor and it was all blamed on the ASM.
This is how our store leader operates.

If Macys wanted an honest survey there should be a place to add your own comments after each of their strategically asked questions.
The surveys are a joke.

Our manager tells us how we should answer and then stands behind us while we are on the computer and watches us. That is why I do not participate. It is total garbage information.

As I said in another post: IF YOU CAN'T ANSWER HONESTLY, THEN DECLINE TO TAKE THE SURVEY. SIT IT OUT. After answering honestly for years, and hearing my co-workers loudly complain about the working conditions and management on a daily basis, but then being sheep and "telling management what they want to hear" on the pulse survey, I became totally disgusted with their lack of spine. Complaining to one another changes NOTHING. If everyone who is afraid to be heard (retaliation is a real concern for some) then REFUSE TO TAKE THE SURVEY. No one can force you to take it and if enough people refuse to take the survey, the lack of company-wide response will speak volumes. The company can't come after you for what you HAVEN'T SAID. EITHER SPEAK UP OR SIT IT OUT.
