I know this round will be even harder, but I'm wondering if it's even possible to survive being put on a PIP in normal circumstances? I've asked around, but nobody I know has been through anything similar. Maybe somebody here will be willing to share his or her experience?

At any company, it is super difficult to recover from. PIPs are a PITA for the manager and really used as the last resort because HR wants a paper trail to fire you. If your manager wanted to or thought they could “fix” you, they wouldn’t use a PIP. Find another job before you get canned.
I would suggest taking it as a warning and make preparations to find a new job. I realize that it may be hard to accept that your future with the company is over, but it is a lot harder to accept when they lay you off or fire you. At least, with a PIP, you know where they stand, use it to your advantage.
