My kid is currently going through the recruitment process for a role in the Inside Sales facility in Austin. He’s still super keen (VMware his first choice as a friend is already there), but I think he’d be better off switching all his efforts into trying to succeed with another program / process instead. I read on another thread that the NCGs have previously been the first to go - but at this point I can’t imagine that those they are recruiting now for next summers intake will ever actually end up being employed. What advice would you give?

I would suggest your son doesn't waste time and apply somewhere else. Not sure what age he is but going through redundancy and take over is very tough, even for those that are in business long time.
You don't want him disappointed and discouraged with work life that early.
Advice would be to let your kid figure it out. Be supportive. Share this message board with them. But trying to solution this for them is not helpful in their long run. If they are interviewing for VMW then they already have gotten themselves to a certain point. If they make the decision to move forward with vmw thats their decision to make and they will need to manage the next steps from that decision. I get being a caring parent, I also have adult children, but at this stage it’s their life you are a supporting character. And they will make some bad decisions along the way and likely fail at times. Just like all of us have. They will learn. Let them.
Nobody knows and asking a random anonymous board in which nobody has the answers outside of speculation is going to help
