I'm not going to claim that this is the case for everybody, but it certainly is for the majority of employees. Unless you know someone there is no chance to be promoted or moved around. I've been passed for promotions twice in as many years for people who are neither as knowledgeable as I am nor do they have the same experience. They do know the right people, though. I was on the fence about leaving for a while, but this has helped me make my decision. I know I'm not the only one.

I was going to go into another industry when I was younger. I told my Dad what I wanted to do and he said "you have to know someone". I didn't realize what he was talking about until I experienced it for myself. We know its everywhere but when I was with Ricoh until 3 years ago, I saw it all the time. Those managers routinely promoted and/or brought in their own "guys" because that's the system they set up for themselves. Its the perfect excuse to harass and get rid of experienced staff.
