Thread regarding VMware layoffs

Advice to VMWare Employees

As an employee who been part of many Broadcom/CA style buy outs I would like to give some advice to the employees of VMware on how to handle the buyout.

  1. Don’t believe the “it will be ok” BS. Update resume, references prepare for mass layoffs and try to enjoy your summer.
  2. Ideally time your next job to get the severance check then start new job shortly after.
  3. Think consultant. Many VMware customers will be abandoned by Broadcom and your customers will need help. I have seen several ex-broadcom employees make big money helping abandoned customers.
  4. Don’t sign anything unless you have a job offer. (See #3)
  5. If you do make it through to Broadcom, many are still on borrowed time. Keep looking. If you find something better, take it.
  6. The first year is brutal. You will get pushed around, lose peers and everything will change dramatically.
  7. You will mostly work from the office at some point, maybe not day one, but soon, plan accordingly.
  8. Most of the layoff/non-layoff is out of your control. Many smart hard-working people with the wrong title/product will be let go, and others who just get by with right title/product will be ok.
  9. Don’t hold a grudge. They will likely cut and lose the wrong people. They might bring you back with a good raise and promotion.

About how many times are we going to see this same list? We get it. It sucks. All of it sucks. Even for the "lucky" who are kept, from what others have said here it sounds like a depressing company. So we're all fu---d one way or another. Hooray.
