Thread regarding VMware layoffs

How many to be laid off day 1?

It is clear that Broadcom will cut 70% of VMware staff. But that is the goal in 3 years.
How many do you think will be cut on the day 1?
My guess is 25%.. that is 9k employees!!
HR, GA, corporate marketing, some sales, some marketing and product management from BU's and even some engineering staff.
Most everyone who joined in the last 6 months will be gone regardless of he organization that you belong.
BTW, 'day 1' will be 9 months from now - March 2023 - Only my guess.

@1ybr+1h5EjQPV: not factual. CA didn’t cut anyone prior to the deal closure. CA had a layoff in April 2018. Deal was announced July 2018. Broadcom fired half of the workforce in November 2018, the same day the deal closed.

VMware and Broadcom management are talking now. VMware will make cuts early based on the goals that Broadcom puts on them. VMware top management wants those $millions that are coming to them. They will not stand in the way. This deal will go through and there will be cuts happening fast. HR, GA, and corporate marketing will get hit hard. Other changes will take a few months.

Again- there is absolutely no reason why VMware would cut employees until the ink is dry on the contract. There is always a possibility that the deal doesn't work out and thus VMware would have shot itself in the foot. Now- to be realistic, yes- most of us are going to be out of a job. Hopefully due to the size and complexity of this transaction it will take longer to do. Use this time wisely. Brush up on skills. Re-do your resumes. Start reaching out to people.

@1bnr+1h5EjQPV wrong. You are naive if you don't think convos are happening. CA cut a significant number of people 12 weeks before announcing acquisition by Broadcon.

Correct. I agree. Until the close, Broadcom doesn't own VMware.
But the real question is, how many will they lay off on the day of the acquisition?

Little bit of incorrect assumptions here. Broadcom can in fact not cut staff until the acquisition goes through. Until the acquisition goes through, all employees are under direct employment from the current VMware corporate structure. So no. Cuts cannot happen before the transaction completes. Because until the acquisition is complete they do not technically own us and cannot call the shots or make any sort of determinations when it comes to the staff that they either keep or lay off.

I don't know if you read a second letter from Broadcom to VMware employees, signed by Tan and Krause, published on June 2, where they state: "In fact, we already held our first integration meeting with the VMware management team, and over the coming weeks and months, we will be working closely together to ensure we can hit the ground running once the transaction is completed."

Expect cuts to start before, sadly, and not after Day 1. For Broadcom, "Day 1" is already halfway throughout the end state. They do know very well how to run an acquisition process and trim fat fast.

I wouldn't expect 25% cuts on day 1. I wouldn't expect any cuts in engineering. Corporate marketing - a lot but less in product marketing/product management (attached to the BU).
Sales won't be gone day 1 either ..
