Thread regarding Shell Oil layoffs

Attrition

Anecdotally, it seems like quite a few staff in my LOB have voluntarily left over the past couple months (i.e. not just after the bonus). Yet whenever the idea of attrition is brought up the line, leadership denies there is any problem. Anybody else seeing something similar?

In 2009 I mentioned a problem of upcoming industry growth and likely staff departures to a VP in HR in Shell
He ignored me. We had layoffs.
Then came retention bonuses. He later told me he was shocked.
HR in Shell is reactive to old data, not forward looking to industry trends and staffing demand. It’s the risk free approach for self preservation.

HR and leadership aren't going to "get it" until something happens, unfortunately. Miss some deadlines, make some mistakes, or God forbid have a safety incident.
While we are stretched thin doing more with less and still delivering, management can pat themselves on the back for a successful cost-saving exercise.

I was in a meeting where HR was asked this question and they said "we just don't see this happening in the numbers"

Agree, i have been seeing this not just in the last couple of months but since last year. It has even been brought up many times in town halls - what are you doing to address the loss of talent we are seeing. But leadership seems to ignore the issue. They seem to think that we will all be happy spending the money to commute back to the office and put up with ridiculous demands as long as they provide us with a few free lunches and a happy hour or two.

Jump for a 20% bump vs 1-2% bump to stay. No guarantee on bonus anymore after 2020. Don’t blame them

If you ignore the problem, it doesn't exist. Just ask our senior leadership.
