Recall Alert: Weekend postings by design?

Why would EV quality be better?

Ford Motor Company is recalling select 2020-2022 Ford Explorer models due to rear axle bolt fracture issue.

The defect: in affected vehicles, the rear axle mounting bolt may fracture during vehicle acceleration.

The hazards: a fractured rear axle bolt will allow the rear axle housing to move out of position, resulting in severe noise and vibration. If the rear axle bolt breaks, driveshaft/half shafts may become disconnected, resulting in loss of transmission torque to the rear wheels which is necessary to hold the vehicle in park. If the parking brake is not applied, the loss of the primary park torque will allow the vehicle to roll in park, increase the risk of a crash or injury.

Ford is not aware of any accidents or injuries related to this issue.

Components: rear axle mounting bolt.

Affected vehicles: select 2020-2022 Ford Explorer models built at the Ford Chicago Assembly Plant between October 22nd, 2018, and April 11th, 2022.

The fix: dealers will replace the defective rear axle mounting bolts with new parts, free of charge.

Mistake, fix, repeat. We no longer have a quality culture. Looks like CR is keeping score.

According to Consumer Reports, the 2022 Ford explorer has a predicted reliability ranking of one out of five. That’s the worst score a vehicle can get, and it’s pretty far below average. But the predicted reliability ranking is based on issues with the 2020 and 2021 model years.

To provide a reliability ranking, Consumer Reports sends out user surveys so owners can report the issues that they faced. The survey contains 17 potential trouble spots ranging from the engine, electronics, transmission body integrity, and more.

The biggest problems seem to be related to the 2020 Explorer’s body integrity, electronics, power equipment, and transmission. Each of these areas has fewer complaints for the 2021 Ford Explorer model year. This could mean that the issues are being solved.

They are only replacing parts for the Police Inteceptors and NOT for any other Explorers right now. And the parts won't be available until October! Meanwhile, Ford plans to do a software tweak to the Power Control Module to have the parking brake automatically apply when the vehicle is in Park. So, instead of fixing things before they go bad, they keep the vehicle from rolling away after it happens. 🤔
