Question. How is it ethical or legal for Macys to all of a sudden require especially older sales associates to be able to climb ladders, push heavy carts, lift 50 pounds as the new job description says for the integrated selling program. It sounds to me like this is a ploy to terminate older or less fit employees who are unable to perform in a new role even though that is not the job we were hired for. Macys still plays the ad over the intercom that working there offers flexibility but that’s not the case anymore either. I’m seeing class action lawsuit filed once this goes live in June. Please share thoughts on this

@5xeq It's the future of retail. Other retailers have already implemented this multi-tasking business plan. We've already had a number of people leave over it.
Way back when we had a whole team that set up Christmas dept and it started in July and deadline set up in August. Actually employees rushed to work in Christmas dept.. it was like you almost had to be chosen to work that dept. How sad they just don’t care, and whoever they hire as Christmas help just don’t show up!
Yes this is a strategy to split one person in as many directions as possible, hence the new starting hourly wage at $15.00 hr. There's always a catch. I've been with the company over 10 yrs in merchandising. Never a sales associate. Never dealt with returns, opening credit, or anything else dealing with the register( except for clocking in/out and price lookup, etc. They want everyone to multi-task. I don't know how this new rollout is going to succeed.
Well I can say that after talking to a former Manager that when the RIF happened to my group almost 3 years ago that age was one of the factors. Along with years of service and salary. I know a lot of people past and present who work hard during their time in the stores. And I also knew people who didn’t give near the same effort. Work hard and do your job while you’re here that’s all I can tell you. Macys just recently changed the way issues are reported to the Help Desk. Now sites have to call for all hardware issues instead of using the tools that were available like logging onto ITXpress or entering an issue from a register. Not making it any easier for our stores that are short staffed.
Worked 22 yrs doing all sorts of jobs in Macys, try lifting heavy totes off of trucks, working in china dept when you did all the floor moves bending, climbing lifting over your head, 2 back surgeries , hernia and neck surgery with plate and screws I’ll never be the same well they let me go during Covid a blessing. These new hires have NO idea what work is if it’s not on a phone they can’t function.. I paid my price.. well “they paid for all my surgeries and I got my own lawyers”.. not worth it. They were trying everything to make me quit but no go I stuck it out.. oh buy the way I’m a older female!
Will the BOH colleagues be scheduled to work during the store hours of open to close?
Associates now have to be global, they have to learn everything that is going on in the store. Sales colleagues and Back to House colleagues need to change there mindset and adapt to the new culture of Macy's.
I’m a twenty year visual manager who is now leaving. I can’t wait to see what the stores look like next Christmas
A sales associate should be able to climb a ladder to get something from the stock room if a customer requires it. When Hudsons was around, the sales associates did all the signing, pricing, merchandising. Sales associates being required to merch stock in the AM is not asking too much. It will help them know their product and what the visual standards are. They'll know where stuff goes for go-backs. Maybe they'll have to do markdowns, which is no hardship. Perhaps they'll have to pick fulfillment which is also no hardship. My store's BOH team is all women, all over the age of 40 and they kick a-s.
So I guess you think that is OK ?
Ageism happens alot in retail.
It is called age discrimination which Macy’s is the king of. They are forcing out the old managers who know how to get things done. The new kids they are hiring walk around smiling and doing very little. They stay in the office and do not respond to calls when needed.
Yes Jeff It is definitely age discrimination because Macy’s has not hired any managers in the past five years over the age of forty.
As far as the workload our store associates have been doing everything at least the old timers do everything. The young kids play on their phones, call out for mental health days and don’t want to work nights or weekends.
If you thought last Christmas was bad wait until this year. Every time they hire someone they leave. This style executive they hired stayed less than a month. Basically she said there is little to no fashion to sell at Macy’s. She said a majority of the merchandise is poor quality and not trendy or fashion forward.
Did she not walk the store before she took the job???
This new program coming this June is associates doing everything around the store. Associates will start to get burn out with the heavy workload.
ethical or legal macys? come on now you cant use those words in same sentence with macys.. and Yes macys is trying to unload everyone older to fill the shoes with kids who do not even care to be there.. problem with this process it doesn't work this time around this kids do not want to work
I am already unloading 1000+ carton trucks and climbing ladders and lifting heavy boxes and I am a 60 year old employee. The reason this program was implemented is because of the lack of people who want to work and all of those associates who call off all the time. You have no one to blame but yourselves. Gone are the days of bsing at your registers get ready to work.
Eventually older sales associates will quit by the end of this year once this changes takes in effect in June.
Obviously discrimination against some people. Hopefully they won’t deny the unemployment that employees will file for when they realize they can no longer do the job Macys requires.
