Thread regarding Union Pacific Corp. layoffs

When is insufficient pay and lack of raises going to start being an issue?

Almost anyone I talk to is unsatisfied with the pay and with the lack of any real raises. Similar dissatisfaction can be seen on posts on this board.
On the other hand I don’t see that many people leaving. Sure, we se a departure here and there when people find better arrangements, but we are not seeing attrition in large portions. Given the amount of unsatisfied people, can we be seeing higher levels of attrition, an can turn out to be an issue for the company soon?

I was in management and got out earlier this year. Best decision I ever made. Therapy has helped with the PTSD and my new employer is actually glad I’m here. Night and day difference!

I'm thinking you should get out more. There's folks leaving quite frequently at many places. The UP is having a he-l of a time getting applicants to fill the positions by the Vena slash and dash plan, on top of the open positions left by the ones who quit. I saw a few open positions that had a signing bonus available to the ones who'd be willing to switch crafts. Now, what's that tell you? The pay is already an issue at the UP. Believe it or not, the UP has an employment problem. If you ask the higher-ups about that, we'll they'll probably tell you that they're making great progress. That's why the higher ups seem so disconnected, because they are. It's easy for someone that has a seven figure income to say the pay isn't that bad, but that person isn't the one who deals with the weather as part of their job. The folks on the ground aren't stupid, and can see very clearly through the corporate BS.

It’s a issue in my household as well. Wife keeps telling me to find a different job. Pay used to be great now it’s just ok for the hrs and lack of sleep etc...

It's already a big issue. I mean bigger then safety. Workforce are just waitin to see what contract we get. If contract is not worth it workforce will be leaving.

It already is an issue. You don’t see people leaving in great numbers because the people that are left have too many years invested in railroad retirement and the penalties for no current connection are severe. These people will likely stay and continue to be disconnected from their jobs. The real tell is recruiting new employees. They have a hard time attracting people with the pay/benefit/lifestyle/treatment structure that is in place and those they do recruit find other jobs after realizing this isn’t a place they want to stay long term.

The only reason I am still here is I am close to 20yrs for RR retirement. After I get to 240 months it is going to depend on this contract and if things improve wether I stay or not. Its doubtful I’ll stay another 10yrs with the job in its current form, I’ll take the hot dog / bathroom trolls advice. I’m gonna shut up and go work somewhere else.

The people I work with are just waiting to see what kind of contract will be settled on. If it’s not very good or at least good enough to keep pace with inflation then I’m assuming more people will just leave IMO. Why would people tolerate the schedule and working conditions if the pay isn’t up to par.
