I don't see a scenario in which things will happen faster than six months. That means that every single one of us will have more than enough time to find a new job. If you can't find a new job in that long, then you have bigger problems than Broadcom's acquisition of this place.

The tricky thing here is that many other companies have slowed or even stopped hiring, so that makes the job market a lot more competitive for those at VMWare who might be laid off.
Wondering if we’re going to do a hiring freeze soon, that would make sense. I have an open req open but it’s been hard to hire for already and now who would join (also what’s the point)? Leaders need to stop pretending it’s business as usual.
we are also entering a slowdown and some people like myself gave up not only existing employment but also other great job offers to join VMware so it absolutely and totally sucks.
They should've had a hiring freeze well before this fiasco because I am positive key management totally knew this months before today that this would potentially happen.
Of course the billionaires don't care what collateral damage they create in the games that they play, simply pathetic!!
It is a good amount of time yes, but if you're an engineer who has been out of the market for awhile or don't have a lot of experience, you're going to have to start hitting the books which means grinding leetcode, studying system design, etc. If you look on Blind a lot of people spend upwards of six months just doing that, not to mention actually going on interviews themselves. And that's even for seasoned engineers in some cases. So one should not be complacent and in my opinion everyone needs to take this opportunity to determine their own value in the market and start making a plan to save themselves.
Yes but think about a new graduate, one that just joined vmware or will be joining shortly. They likely dont have experience yet or haven’t gaines enough to go out and compete as a professional hire in the market given that likely they’ve lost the new grad card. Im in this position, it’s very tough. I will do what needs to be done to make sure Im in a good place in 6 months but still, it’s not that easy
The amount of time it takes depends upon your specific skill set and demand. Some will be able to find something quickly and others will have a much harder time finding work.
Don't make assumptions that 6-months are enough.
