Thread regarding VMware layoffs

This is about the worst thing to happen to us at VMware

Wonderful Company. Wonderful culture. I've been in this business for 20 years. I've been at many tech firms that were just totally brutal and cut throat. VMware was not that and was such a unique company that really put a lot of emphasis on treating its employees with dignity and respect. I would have gladly stayed there for many more years. And then this happened. All of the comments here allude to the new company being totally brutal and happy to rip whatever company they get ahold of to shreds, destroy its brand, fire its people and get rid of its culture.

They do so without realizing that VMware was what it was for what? Its people. You treat people well and guess what? They do great work for you. And they deliver a great product. You take that away and you are left with what happens at most tech firms: a constant revolving door of employees who have zero allegiances to their company and will jump at the first better offer they get somewhere else. And with that comes less and less real innovation and less overall experience.

I see the writing on the wall and am sending out resumes. To the rest of my fellow VMware folks the best of luck to you all and maybe someday we can all work for another company that has a heart.

One good thing that will happen is we will no longer have this constant overdose of the sickening pronouns. Please we respect the lgbt q community but don’t force your pronouns on us.

VMWare ended up exactly where it should be. A legacy software company with a fantastic install base. Exec management made critical strategic decisions over time that pretty much guaranteed this result. Limited innovation relative to where the market was moving. Either a complete blind spot, arrogance or simply failing to see where the puck was going. A sad case in many ways given where modern software has gone and how company's that have embraced modern software (and how customers consume it) have hyper-grown their value over the last few years. Compare that to VMware. Bottom line is their strategy has worked. Unbelievably great legacy software company analogous to mainframes of the 80’s. Shareholders have been rewarded and a great buy by Broadcom and sale by VMware.

Best of luck to all in the new combined company.

VMware's numbers are not good. 14.16% profit vs. Broadcom's 29.76%. VMware will have to shape up. VMware's numbers are even bad next to competitors. The days of constant virtual signaling about DEI and ESG are over. You can take your pronouns out of your profile now, you just leave as you won't be happy anyway. Oh and would someone take care of the turtles, they don't need to suffer though all of this.

We became much less productive, so part of the problem is ours. How I wish we do this to ourselves so it's more humane
"VMware is currently at $342,667 per employee while Broadcom is at $1,499,500. To get to the same number 28,930 VMware employees will have to be cut, leaving 8,570. So 77% of VMware employees will be cut."

There's one seller that matters - meaning matters in the sense of actual shareholder votes - and that's Michael Dell. This has always been a transaction for him, from the initial acquisition, through the dividend payouts and debt pileup, through today. If you thought it was about something else you're either naive or ignorant.

The people at VMware who agreed to take this 61 Billion dollar check FULLY KNOW how Broadcom has conducted these kinds acquisitions in the past. (deep cuts, consolidations and layoffs)

If VMware's people and culture is so important than why isn't it being protected through a rejection of the purchase offer by the owners of VMware?

All VMware had to say was "No thanks we value our company, its employees and our culture and we will continue to operate as-is"

But it's worse than that! They are actually letting other buyers make offers for a period of time. So maybe somebody has $65 billion! Or $70 billion!

You're angry and hurt. That is understandable.

But it sure seems silly to blame the buyer.

Blame the seller.

Dell is in debt, he spun off VMW and now he wants to sell it, probably so that he can go buy something else.

"Somebody at VMware agreed to this deal. Go complain to them. "

The brutal and unfriendly-feeling truth is that this was all about money. That's it. And when it comes to Broadcom, that appears to be the only thing they care about.

Get out the resumes. There are few times in life where you know are given months of advance warning to get out versus being let go all of a sudden. Take advantage of that.

You can blame the people who approved the sale of VMware to Broadcom for any egregious reductions in force that happen.

VMware isn't being acquired by Broadcom in a hostile takeover.

Somebody at VMware agreed to this deal. Go complain to them.

Right?

I thought the same thing with CA being acquired. But honestly, it was the best thing for the brand. We trimmed down, focused on what was worth it and now we are able to move quick and build better solutions that matter. I felt numb for a few weeks but got over it, it’s not the end of the world and Broadcom is—contrary to the forum—a pretty decent place to work that pays you well.
