I accepted the offer for VMware months ago as a software engineer and heard about the news. I am in a rotational program that allows me to work on two different teams for the first year. Is it possible that Broadcom rescind new grad offers or lay off new grads just coming in in a year?

It is up to your manager and director. They are the one to give out the name. They do not care about new hire or experience. It is all about who they can depend on after the acquisition and who they can fit into the budget.
Broadcom has AOP plan before every year. It includes number of head count, expense (salary, bonus , raise … equipment) and revenue. GM must review and get approve from Hock before each year and they must operation within the plan.
So if they plan said they need to reduce 30% of the staffs at the initial round, they have to pick 30% to fit the head count and salary expense. If they want to have raise for the remainder 3%, they must pick 3% more to layoff.
That is how AOP work.
Anybody can kindly advise to new college hire with starting date in July?
Since the deal is not closed (and not expected to close for 6-12 months), Broadcom would have nothing to do with VMware until then. Of course VMware themselves could chose to cancel the offer I guess? And then once the deal closes, who knows.
It seems like Broadcom would keep software engineers though? I really have no idea though.
It depends if you are really needed or there just so that some senior engineer has more time for coffee.
If you are needed and in a permanent contract you may have some chances. If you're on a temp contract look for something new. If you're a "needed req" because you're doing someone else's job, that person will start working to keep the seat and then you...
find another job in the next 6 months, you will be gone in Jan 2023... why would they keep someone who is brand new given that they have no experience with the company's products? makes no sense for them to keep anyone who joined recently since until ramp up you're a liability to the company's bottom line. Read their presentation for the acquisition, it clearly says they will cut any function that isn't required for revenue.
Follow your gut. It can’t hurt to see what other options u have. At the end of the day business is cold, and will do what is best for the business.

From the above discussion: When they took over CA, any temps or interns were let go immediately. All new starters were let go as well, across the board. All hiring was stopped and offers were rescinded. We had two new starters in our team that were on their second month, and they were fired immediately even though they were required head count replacements.
We are engineers, I guess we should be okay. I am in a similar program and accepted the offer last December.
