They keep people who are experienced, irrespective of the age. They want the BEST.
This is not true as the US has age discrimination laws and they laid off ages have to average the stay ages.
In Europe for my product it was the older and more experienced Engineers who were originally kept. I was 45 and the other two were close to 60.
