Thread regarding Boeing Co. layoffs

Starliner

Unbelievable! Even after all this time Boeing still hasn't even decided if they will redesign their corrosion prone valves...so even if this latest non-crewed test is successful, Boeing will need to do another non-crewed test:

https://www.cnbc.com/2022/05/12/boeing-considers-redesigning-crucial-valve-for-starliner-space-capsule.html

SpaceX would have redesigned and flight tested it in less than two weeks.

NASA reveals crew for Starliner spacecraft’s first astronaut flight

A successful CFT mission will send the Starliner on its way to achieving
full certification, enabling it to provide ongoing crewed flights to and from
the space station at 60% more cost than the SpaceX Crew Dragon spacecraft.

Boeing hasn't won a new crewed space mission since 2014
and it may never have one again.

It began with just 12 contracts.

https://www.fool.com/investing/2022/06/27/bad-news-for-boeing-spacex-wins-5-more-contracts/

In 2014, NASA embarked upon a three-year mission to explore new ways
of sending astronauts to the International Space Station (ISS)
and to seek out new partnerships with private industry,
tasking SpaceX and Boeing (BA -2.37%) with a request to build two new
spaceships for a combined $6.8 billion. SpaceX would receive $2.6 billion to design
and build a Crew Dragon spacecraft by 2017, and use it to send astronauts to ISS
Six Times to Boeing’s None.
Boeing would have be paid $4.2 billion to do the same thing.

Ultimately, it would take SpaceX not three but six years to launch its first
crewed spaceflight (Demo-2, in 2020). But once that was accomplished,
SpaceX quickly hit its stride, launching four new fully certified
"Crew" missions over the next two years.
Boeing is taking a bit longer to fully fail in its contract, finally completing an
Un-crewed and flawed test flight just last month, Boeing has yet
to send up its "Coffin Capsule with astronauts actually aboard.

https://www.cbsnews.com/news/boeing-starliner-test-flight-international-space-station-spacex-orbits/

While SpaceX was managing its 22nd launch so far this year,
Boeing’s CгapLiner capsule undocked from the space station's forward port
at 2:36 p.m., setting off on a four-hour 13-minute trip back to Earth.
Landing at White Sands Space Harbor in New Mexico was expected at 6:49 p.m.
EDT (4:49 p.m. local time).

Boeing’s CгapLiner program's initial test flight in late December 2019 suffered
embarrassing software and communications glitches,
that prevented rendezvous and docking with the space station.
An attempted re-flight in August 2021 was scrubbed due to
corroded propulsion system valves witch handle highly corrosives chemicals
these valves were inexplicably made of aluminum, and a departure from all
norms in the industry.
However in Boeing's defense, the company did out-source the guidance and
communications software along with the propulsion system to a school for the
intellectual disabled in an effort to elevate their STEM program

WSMR prepares for landing, recovery of Starliner spacecraft
Boeing engineers are hopeful the valves will work and the craft won’t burn-up.

https://www.alamogordonews.com/story/news/local/2022/05/22/wsmr-prepares-landing-recovery-starliner-spacecraft/9871535002/

NASA and Boeing's Orbital Flight Test-2 (OFT-2) successfully launched on May 19,
and now White Sands Missile Range (WSMR) is preparing for the landing of the
CST-100 Starliner spacecraft.

The spacecraft was launched from Space Launch Complex 41 in Cape Canaveral,
Florida, and the anticipated landing is on May 25 at White Sands Missile Range.
Starliner’s mission under NASA’s Commercial Crew Program will be an un-crewed
test flight to the International Space Station,
although it is envisioned as a transportation system for astronauts one day.

Who is actually going to fly on this POS Starliner ? It's like going into space in a junky defect ridden 1980 Chrysler K-Car. They should make Calhoun and the BOD be the first people to fly on it.

Boeing Starliner Limps Into Orbit After Two Engines Fail
https://futurism.com/the-byte/boeing-starliner-orbit-two-engines-fail

not everything went according to plan. Two of Starliner’s thrusters didn’t fire
as planned just over 30 minutes into the flight.
One thruster only managed to provide orbital insertion thrust for a single second.
Its backup fired for 25 seconds before also giving up.

Fortunately, a third backup thruster was able to heave Boeing’s POS Starliner
Coffin Capsule into a stable orbit.

Watching that Starliner launch was like watching an old 1960s Apollo launch. Like a 100 people manually looking at data, making decisions and calling go or no go. Such an obsolete approach compared to the fully autonomous, computer monitored, streamlined and efficient SpaceX approach.

I sure wouldn't want to be in ISS with Starliner in close proximity. Kinda surprised NASA is willing to take this risk given what we know about Boeing. Plus the ULA/Starliner launch cost has to be astronomical compared to SpaceX. Crazy!

Yeah, there is very little Boeing engineering in Starliner. Most of it was out-sourced...and there are several ongoing Boeing/supplier lawsuits. So pretty much what one would expect from the new Boeing business enterprise.

If they were looking for dummies, should have tried a union meeting.

Those dummies traded pensions for xboxes

Lost benefits the last 3 contracts

Don't realize the union leaders and company leaders are beasties.

Lost rhe 87 to Charleston

I could go on, but only have so many characters.

SpaceX is amazing and now totally dominate all things Space:

https://www.cnn.com/2022/05/13/tech/spacex-launch-pace-schedule-scn/index.html

Unlike Boeing, they manufacture everything in-house...launch bases,, rocket stages, capsules, satellites, space suits, etc.

We are hearing this project is being abandoned as we can't compete with SpaceX launch cost. So just trying to reach ISS so as to complete a term in NASA contract and save some face.

Boeing laid off the majority of their defense engineers in the Pacific Northwest who were their most Experienced engineers because they wanted to replace them with level one engineers who are paid the least. Another decision based purely on cutting cost and you see the results of the decision.

You actually expect Boeing to do the “right” thing or follow industry standards. If it costs an extra penny Boeing won’t do it. Gotta save that money to pay off bribes to the FAA, DOD, and the Board’s golden parachutes.

Not surprised. There are few capable engineers to be found. Seems like a mass exodus in last 6 months or so. Engineering job market is great and Boeing future is poor.
