I have only been here for a little over half a year and I am very disappointed. I didn’t think the atmosphere would be this toxic. My question for long time employees, has there always been a lot of negative energy here?

Some Germans have a personality like mustard. Try working with them and you find out what toxic means.
Apple sucks
If I really look back at it their were probably signs that apple was going in this direction for awhile now. Things like heading up temporary departments only to have them be shut down with recognition being a plaque and a water bottle not even worth an exceeds on my APR. Saying they’d work with people when Covid first started and then their version of working with people was discriminatory at best and required you to go to management with a whole life story. Rotations rather than hiring for multiple departments.
It got worse when I came back from a rotation. Tools introduced for micromanagement, employees being forced into even more skilling with no bump in pay.
The truth is you are a consumable product and you will be used until your consumed. Stay for a year get the experience while you can and get out.
Yes, but not this bad. The past few years we've seen an explosion of toxicity at Apple.
