I don’t want to make deliberate efforts to become my manager’s favorite. I think that sometimes it is more important to maintain my integrity, although I think that is why I am at disadvantage here when it comes to promotion, but also other things as well.

Sounds like you are already familiar with the drawbacks. You will be passed over for promotions and your raises will be less than they otherwise would be.
My personal cosmetic/prosthetic surgery proved successful.
Nose is 4 inches longer and the "smelling lobes" removed from my brain.
But, then, I'm a ladder-climber.
