I have a colleague who still does not understand that by proving his skills and worth can only antagonize the manager. It would not be the first case where a manager made sure to get rid of an employee who is more knowledgeable than himself. In such a toxic environment, it may be wiser to keep low profile until the person gets a chance to prove their worth somewhere else?

Very small number stayed. Qualified engineers already left VMWARE
Not covering up my light just because you know of one bad manager. I dare someone to try and oust me for doing an amazing job. I'll have their job.
