I’ve seen a scenario play out over the years that I truly don’t understand. There will be one niche area with just one expert. The expert leaves, they throw someone else in that role whether they want it or not. Goal them aggressively with being the expert. Usually the person they put in the new position is coming from a level down. The new responsibilities for them are deemed a level up but their pay does not increase summed up with “Just do the role and later on we’ll talk about money later.” That person rises to the challenge and now THEY are the go to guy. Time passes and “Well I did what I could but HR won’t come up with the $”. So now THAT person leaves and again there’s a vacuum. I know that the shot callers know it. I just don’t think they really care. It’s nuts.

It’s more like:
Step 1, put all your eggs in one basket.
Step 2, fire the basket out of a cannon against the wall.
After 5 years, I’m amazed as to how many times I’ve seen this in every group. Sometimes followed up with a study group to unravel the big mystery as to why they can’t retain top talent. Someone along the way points out the obvious and you get a Homer Simpson moment….”DOH!!!” and the best part….wait for it….wait for it…..nothing changes. Rinse, repeat.
Lol literally me right now
