A more effective way to damage Russia

Source below. In the aviation sector sanctions against Russia have been varied and include restrictions on aircraft leasing and critical spare parts, although I don’t have a good idea of their impact so far.

It's interesting to note that the top 5 Russian airlines (based on 2019 passenger stats) all procure their core commercial IT platforms (e.g. reservations) from 2 western companies: Sabre (USA) and Amadeus (Spain):

  • Aeroflot: 37M - Sabre
  • S7 Airlines: 14M - Amadeus
  • Rossiya (part of Aeroflot Group): 12M - Sabre
  • Pobeda: 10M - Navitaire (Amadeus)
  • Ural Airlines: 10M - Amadeus

These platforms are not only mission critical but are typically so complex that, under normal circumstances at least, it would take an airline ~1-3 years to replace. So were Amadeus/Sabre to switch an airline off it would likely ground that airline within a few days/weeks depending on what operational contingencies they had in place. (btw I welcome any insights to the contrary from experts in this area).

Done en masse such action by Amadeus/Sabre could effectively ground the vast majority of Russian air travel, and much more quickly than missing spare parts. Thats a big deal for the economy and citizens of a country of Russia's geographic size.

Given the catastrophic situation in Ukraine this seems to me like an effective evolution of sanctions against Putin, his government and its supporters; and not too different from the actions Visa and Mastercard have taken in the last few hours (albeit I believe under government sanctions) to block Russian banks from their payment networks.

Both Russia and Boeing have a lot in common.
Both are pariahs on the global stage.

I predict there will either be a revolution in Russia (like the failed 2000 Boeing engineering strike) or there will be a continuing trajectory to non-relevancy (similar to Boeing). Lots of disenfranchised and unmotivated people in Russia (and Boeing) who were badly mistreated to the benefit of the corrupt leadership. It's impossible to have and sustain a long-term successful country (or company) with this arrangement.

I agree with much of this. We just need to be careful when we say Russia. The Russian people or the Chinese people are not the problem here. Like Boeing, it is just the corrupt, greedy, self-entitled leadership exercising their warped mindset that is the problem. It would be nice to see the Russian military return to Russia and save their Russian people.

Titanic is good analogy. The Boeing corporate arrogance and ineptness, the endless losing sport team like statements and the non-existent progress on all their failed projects makes for a quite compelling case. Just seems like a last ditch play to talk up their faltering stock price to better fund their executives for the eventual bankruptcy phase. Lots of executives big bonuses last week too. Kinda hard to understand why given their current dismal state and their increasingly downward trajectory.

The US government Boeing corporate welfare program did as much to help Russia as anything. So did the now 25 year old Boeing Moscow design center. The latest Boeing PR band hype is increased 737max rate. Does anyone actually still dance to their music anymore?

Yeah, COMAC sold another 600 airplanes last month. Their backlog is now over 50% of Boeing's backlog and COMAC won't even have their first airplane certified until end of year. C919 is lower performance than A320 and 737 but at 30% or less cost it is apparently starting to sell very well.

Boeing has had a short-sighted perspective and an only promote my kids leadership policy for many years. Them chickens are now coming home roost.

I never understood the favorite trade status China enjoyed. Just allowed them to embrace an industrial revolution and now they’re more powerful then ever.

Trading with them as a communist country was a mistake. Their human rights record has not improved at all with the addition of capitalism. They are threatening Taiwan.

I don’t think opening trade with communist countries has a positive effect. How do you give China favorite trade status while I’m posting all these sanctions on Russia. You’re putting Russia in a corner where they have nothing to lose with these sanctions. Europe has under funded their defense for decades and no position to deal with Russian aggression. After 20 years enough can I stand the US is tired of war has no stomach for it. Which Putin knew and that’s the reason he invaded.

What’s extremely troubling is to have a design center in Moscow training engineers how to design aircraft who then turn around will work for Russia and their defense industry most likely now. Extremely shortsighted.

A more effective way to damage Russia is to install a puppet government
In Ukraine headed up by a comedian with no grasp of the key geographic
strategic importance of the only warm water port available to Russia.
This “Keystone” Region provides for freedom of navigation for commerce
And military access to the world oceans.
This “Keystone” Region is of National Interest to Russia and its Security

A comedian with no grasp of this fact is cajoled and inveigled
into believing that turning Ukraine into a Spicket called NATO
would be in everyone’s best interest because it would pay, So Well.

War is what was, always going to happen in such an event
And was spelled out in agreements at the end of WW||

Turns out, this was the best way to damage Russia.
