To all the Citi folks who are on here, THANK YOU for sharing your stories and exposing the truth. Coming into Citi as a young person, I was emotionally hazed by my entire department and I thought it was because I was doing something wrong. I took the abuse from my manager and co-workers because Im not a quitter and I thought it would make me stronger. After being here for several years Ive realized it wasn’t me. Its the toxic culture that permeates throughout my team and now I can see its a Citi wide problem. Folks theres a sub-culture here at Citi that seeks to destroy new comers. Some of the old timers don’t like change, they don’t like progress, they don’t like new ideas and they don’t like being challenged and this is in New York where the cream de la creme work. Some of the best folks are in the smaller more isolated places of America. I say this hoping a new person reads it and understands its not you its that rotten sub-culture that may never go away. Keep your head up and ignore the noise Citi as a company isn’t that bad its the people who ruin it for others.

I was on boarded at Citi in 2022. My first day there I knew I wouldn’t last. They brought me in as a manager with zero training. I believe I was brought in to fail. I had more than three audits in a year. The manager who hired me left me out to dry as if he did not hire me. I believe the environment is very racist. There are a lot of people who gossip with zero skillsets. Gossip gets you ahead. I got a new manager whom was a female on a power trip boy did she make sure she show everyone who is boss. That environment is perfect for submissive people who like to be the favorite of you’re a hard worker who have actual skill sets this is not the place for you.
My second boss at Citi was the worse boss I’ve ever had…..ever.
We had team meetings everyday and every time they made sure to say two things, whether the situation warranted it or not:
“If you don’t like it, leave.”
“There are a thousand people who are willing to take your place.”
They’d deliver a message or hand out work then wrap it up with those two things.
So all in all, Citi made me really numb to the word layoff. While life changing and unpredictable, the thought of it has minimal impact on my stress levels.
It is you. No doubt. You think of new idea and improvement. This is not allowed. You will be successful if you focus on feeding their eagles. I have a new hire in my team. 24 years old girl. Came with zero. She became the president of fun community. Promoted to be senior Vice President at 28. All she wears almost swimming suit at work. She is passing all. Professionals. Yes in my office. True
I support the OP! It is fact. I have witnessed it from stakeholder collaborators - blatant hostility to passive aggressive derision. My mgmt structure is GREAT but that doesnt make me blind to other teams and other mgmt structures where i have seen it and thanked my stars I wasn't in those groups.
Is this consumer or investment bank? Consumer is chill.
This is true. Not the first time Ive heard this has happened at Citi. Not all teams are the same but some groups and managers are very toxic. As this person said Citi isn’t as bad its the people and hence why folks are leaving in droves.
Dude, it’s you. When I came in as a new person I had a great team. I have liked some managers more than others, but never what you’re describing. Maybe you have sh---y social skills and don’t know how to build relationships. You don’t come in as a know it all trying to change every process with no history or institutional knowledge. Maybe you just annoy your team and manager.
Seriously? What area are you working in? Hazing? C’mon.
