Thread regarding Shell Oil layoffs

Going from being PROUD to work for Shell to being EMBARRASSED - a 20-year journey

That's it...when I was hired in 2002, I was excited, the company treated me well, compensation was high, raises were high, bonuses were high. People in those days were jealous that I worked for Shell. People always said they sent resumes to Shell for years and never got a call for an interview. They were like "Wow, how did you get on at Shell? I've always dreamed of working there!"

Today? It's embarrassing....nobody wants to work for Shell. We are now paid less than equivalent positions in the tech sector. The only reason I am sticking with it is I am 5 years from reaching 80 points. But as soon as that happens, I am outie. I won't get the full medical as you have to work 30 years and no way I am working 10 more years for this company. I'll just go to Ben Taub.

If you are less than 40 y/o, get the he-l out of Shell (and OG altogether). I am envious of YOU as you all have that option.

People in this thread are claiming to be gen X but dropping the most boomer takes. I feel the need to remind you: you work for a big evil oil company.

I was very very proud to work for thos company. They come take a massive sh-t on you when you leave. Be ready to suffer if you try to work. They have a well worked out blueprint they used w me that was more sick than one can ever imagine.

As said above, leaders are arrogant and incompetent. My exact description of my FORMER supervisor! He did nothing all day, but check his 401k balance, while delegating his duties to subordinates who were not qualified, nor compensated for performing such work. We finally got smart, and purposely kept screwing up, making him look bad. When people from Houston finally visited the location to get some answers as to what was happening, they were sorry they asked! The result was the deadwood supervisor being transferred to somewhere he did not want to be, and within 2 months, he retired!

Good to hear from the HR, management, and of course, the next-gen managers/ coordinators. Everything is awesome!

I think everyone will be happier if people who don't like the "elitist socialist" direction of the company, leave. He-l, give 'em a nice severance package to self-select out of the company so we can move on.

I joined the company as a seasoned professional. The pay was terrific but the culture IS horrible - it’s an elitist socialist company pretending to be competitive. Now it’s fully woke. Most leaders are arrogant, incompetent, and spend their days ‘kissing upwards’, doing little of value for their people or the business. This behavior creates workplace toxicity that colours every aspect.

You CAN remain in that environment, but there are consequences for your mental and emotional health. My advice is to exit as soon as feasible. You will add years to your life - your future you will be thankful and happy.

We have very similar in timing, OP, but I'd like to check your gen X membership card. Was never "proud" to work here even in good times, because it was just a job I went to. Not "embarrassed" now, because it's still just a job.

I'm with you, it's a pretty cr---y place to be now, but unleash your inner "meh" and grind it out until that next package. I'm going to go rewatch Reality Bites.
