Thread regarding Cengage layoffs

Big layoffs seem almost impossible to me

Of course, you should always be prepared, but I don't think there will be any big layoffs for a long time. It’s just my personal opinion, because I really don’t believe Cengage can afford to cut a large number of people. Perhaps I'm wrong?
For now, I hope for the best, but I am preparing for the worst.

I am feeling reasonably sure that the upper crust has discovered that very noisy mass layoffs are bad for moral amongst the peons. I don't know that they'd hesitate to do this again, but as someone points out below there are not many masses remaining to be laid off anymore.

The layoffs DO continue however, and they happen steadily. These days they tend to be much more quiet and they involve plucking individuals from their roles and tossing them out, a few here, a few more there. Word spreads quietly in the immediate teams involved, but not much further than that. Much easier to maintain the happy-happy-transparency illusion this way, don't ya know!

How can there be mass layoffs when there are no more masses to lay off?

The sales force is bare-bones. Field reps are generalists and their territories too big.

Development has been outsourced. Few direct employees left to let go.

Editorial . . . what's that?

Marketing could be in for a trim.

Inside sales remains bloated. They should be cruising LinkedIn on a regular basis.

Middle management? Ah - now THERE is a truly bloated area that will likely see some cuts, probably sooner than later.

Honestly, this teetering org is about as lean as they come.

@2vpp+1fnFbZYE That is pretty messed up given the history of layoffs at Cengage. Any manager joking about their employee losing their job is wildly inappropriate.

You think he's teasing when he says that, huh?

Best of luck to you. Truly. You'll be fine, whatever happens. Just be prepared for the worst, that way it won't suck quite as much for you if/when it does happen.

I hope that is true, everyday management acts like they are going to get rid of some people, which makes for tense atmosphere. My boss keeps teasing me saying you are nice and its going to suck when I have to get rid of you.

Yeah, I would say it is unlikely. They have spent the last 10+ years whittling the company down to size and have largely dealt with most of the legacy bloat. Cengage is probably about the size it should be given its revenue. It's still a company owned by private equity which means they will continue looking for places to nickel and dime which may or may not be in the long term best interests of the company.
