Thread regarding Shell Oil layoffs

People are too quick to leave these days

Very few think long term. The company that you're leaving Shell for because it claims it offers permanent RTO might reconsider at any point in the future. They also can decide to offshore their remote jobs at some point, because why not? If they can be done remotely, then they can be done remotely by somebody cheaper. You're leaving a good and safe job for something completely uncertain. I don't think most of you have truly thought this through.

What do you think RTO means?

This is an example of the attitude personnel get when they realize big business puts profits above the personnel who make the decisions for the company. Seen it on numerous occasions throughout my career and soon the company fails from within and the personnel making these decisions can’t figure out what happened to their perfect world or they move on to destroy another company

Clear roles and accountabilities are important. Without this, one does not have freedom to act causing a very toxic environment. If you joined in the last 10 years with lower benefits, no harm in looking outside. It is all the same. With stock options elsewhere, compensation could be higher too.

I think your delusional if you think any job in Shell is secure. Times have changed.

Good, safe job? Are you a VP or do you think you're my Daddy? (Probably both).

For us "children" hired in the last ten years, 80 point pension and health care in retirement are gone. Wages are stagnant while inflation is through the roof. Benny got away with eliminating bonuses and will do it again...

Should I go on? What does our job look like in 10 years? None of us studied windmills so new energy will be staffed by the coordinator-types you like, not the people finding and producing oil today. Your hand-picked team leads manage up. And yes, you know what? Returning to an open office is stupid and ineffective for your top technical performers.

OP probably works in IT and worried that his job will be outsourced to India

Who are you trying to convince, OP? Unless you are HR or middle management, I don’t know of anyone pushing others to RTO. Most of us either want to continue WFH or at least are open to others doing so.

Many have thought it through for the past two years and have finally decide that their needs come before the company's. Many are not leaving solely because they are being asked to return to the office, but because of what it represents. A return to a toxic hostile work environment that has a lasting impact long after the work day has supposedly ended. More and more people are taking the stand they're no longer going to sacrifice their well being for companies profit.
