Thread regarding Hy-Vee layoffs

More than 19 laid off employees were not offered other positions

I work at HST. I know and continue to talk to several former Marketing employees who were a part of two large groups they were laid off Monday, March 21. To be clear, they were NOT offered other positions, let alone positions at the store level. The narrative that only 19 IT employees were not given this offer is false. It would make sense that they would extend this offer to former store employees, but Randy seems to be relying on misinformation to avoid admitting that they straight up laid off way more than 19 people.

Hearing all of this makes me realize that this sort of behavior only adds fuel to the “yes sir” attitudes at the office. Previous reply is right, who would want to challenge or go against or offer any sort of feedback for fear of their own jobs being eliminated. Seems as though possible only the “yes men” get the fancy quarterly promotions and new job title prefixes. 🧐

It will be interesting to see if they get away with offering retail jobs as a way to avoid a layoff notice. It doesn't work as a means of avoiding unemployment benefits -- the job you're offered has to be considered "suitable employment" in terms of pay, hours, location, working conditions etc. in relation to the employee's former position. It doesn't seem right that you can be forced from a desk job where you work M-F 8-5 and earn $80k into a job where you're on your feet 8 hours, working nights and weekends, earning $15 an hour. and that's not considered a layoff.

Randy thinks he’s smarting than everyone at HyVee. He knows HyVee employees will just take it all day and he’s right. They can’t do anything about it. Staff member that are vp and above are just trying to save their own jobs. Most of them don’t have education past high school so if they were to get fired they wouldn't find a job making that pay.

No one buys the "offered jobs at store level" excuse. Hiring people who have invested in college degrees and years of experience as graphic designers or IT specialists, firing them a few weeks later, then saying, "oh, you're not really fired, you can work as kitchen help!" is just piling insult on injury. Maybe if more execs had college degrees, they would appreciate how laughable that is. The fact that they don't -- and that those who do understand lack the spine to explain it to them -- is why this has exploded in their faces.
