Is there any way to deal with a manager who doesn’t understand the job but somehow just "knows" that it can be done in such a short time? Any rational explanation of why this cannot be done within that timeframe, he takes as an attack on his own ego. I will definitely have to look for a new job.

I had a similar situation and it reached to the degree that I directly went to HR and told them everything. I felt like I got nothing to loose because my stress level was highest ever with this mean supervisor, who took it personal and made it worse every way. Results? Me and my manager both got laid off. Another proof that HR is not your side. They just don't want to see and want to ignore problems. Anyway, fortunately for me, I've got better job offer and I am WAY better than I was at GE. I feel like it is disguised bliss for me. You don't have to put up with unreasonable pushes and unfair treatment. There ARE many places to work. GE is just one of them and they have been apparently not doing well in their business. So why stay?
Just get a free consultation from your local employment lawyer. A lot of people don't realize what may be actually going on.

Just Leave! There's JOBS EVERYWHERE!
Just do your personal best. Nothing is worth sweating that much over.
Good, Fast, Cheap. ---- Choose Two.
If your manager wants fast every time, they'll be sacrificing cost or quality.
Just do what ever you want. It’s only GE and you will most likely be laid off soon. LC is not done yet with the restructuring.
Well. For one you can get off here and go to work
Yeah, you're on the right track. You either have to get them to see reason, get them fired, or find a new gig. If there are 3-5 of you who feel the same way, you 'might' be able to get them to see reason, if all of you come together to discuss it. If there are 8 or more of you, it's not a trivial task to get someone like that unseated, but it's certainly not impossible. If it's just you, or you and 1-2 others... just find a new place to work. Not worth it.
