I’m not one of those who thinks it should be easy to get a promotion. However, the problem is that it is unclear how to get a promotion here. Work hard? Be visible? Stay engaged? I’ve been putting in the maximum effort for a few years now and I haven’t gotten anywhere close to a promotion. It seems to be reserved for manager’s favorites only?

the long and short of it is, your supervisor/manager does not give a hoot about you, they have their own agenda to complete, the minute you realize that you are a two dime piece nothing that can be replaced in a new york minute the sooner you know do your hours and enjoy life
Goodness , I knew it wasn't only me that has been shafted over the years, put the effort in , gain the knowledge, even told my Line Manager that I wanted to advance, even opening up to him about how I thought the process has been mismanaged. How can a vacancy be given out without the process being completed for advancement, not the first time , not the second but several times, but is this corporate decision sent down to lower level managers of plants to give the advancement to someone with a college education employee over a 10+ year experienced employee both with excellent skills, think it is only going to go one way,
To get promoted in the technical ladder these days, you have to meet one of the two criteria below :
Meet the criteria for a diversity candidate.
Have friends in high places ( managers, TD's and higher level of management).
If you don't meet these criteria, then either you wait for eternity or you don't get promoted at all.
Rather simple rules for the technical Joe these days.
First step is to ask bluntly from your manager. Ask him/her why you haven’t been promoted yet and what it would take for you to get promoted?
Second, often technical folks don’t realize their own accomplishments. Make a bullet list of everything you have done in last couple of years and compare it with your managers’ response. It may not be immediately clear to you and hence to your manager but if you think hard, chances are you have already accomplished those goals/requirements. Good luck.
