Thread regarding Hy-Vee layoffs

Corporate cuts

For a company that says we "want to be the best place to work and shop in America" they sure are all talk.

The top leadership all bends down to whatever Randy the CEO says. No one can have other opinions. If you haven't run a store your opinion isn't valued. They only care about the employee stock and making sure they get their fat payouts.

They have cut 50% of Communications, Marketing, IT and other areas. They always told us Fareway was on the ropes but it appears Hy-Vee is in REAL financial trouble. Why else do you cut so much of your corporate staff that support stores to drive sales?

Oh and 2 weeks pay/benefits is all you get as you are walked out. Thanks for the appreciation of working weekends and on my vacations with my family. A truly heartless organization that will rot from the inside until they remove Randy and his groupies.

Sad what a great Iowa company has become....

What "Reactive Randy" does not say in the video is the number of "forced" retirements that were made in addition to the terminations. I have a friend who has many years of service with Hy-Vee and was a stockholder. This person was asked to "retire" because of their many years of service. My friend did not want to go, but was "coached" into leaving the company. They will get all the perks of retiring, but it they said it feels like they were terminated!!!! This is a classic way of getting people to leave Hy-Vee who have been there a long time or a senior level person. These will never make the local news!

All these stores need to run on way less hours, my department has to cut 150 hours, so explain to me how these ppl laid off are going to be able to be put on store payroll when we forced to cut tons of hours per store…..

8000 views, LOL. what a disaster for corp communications folks. you should be ashamed about how your employees feel. look at at how many unhappy people we have posting here. in thousands. and i'd bet there will be tens of thousands more who will come here and complain about injustice.

James you should reach out to a store to see how many hours they are told to cut. I was told each store needs to cut 400 hours to make up for last months profits. Yes they only laid off 121 employees but they are also cutting store labor hrs. This is just the start.

To the corporate lackeys trying to curry favor with Randy by criticizing the people who post here ... ask your 121 ex-colleagues (or whatever made-up number Randy quoted in his call) if they saw it coming or deserved it. You could be next, you know. And you won't see it coming, either.

Funny enough for the person who said why pay 30% more at Hy-Vee, the warehouses are profitable parts of the business. They mark up products around 20% (some higher or lower) and the stores essentially buy the products from their own company.

So when you go to Hy-Vee and pay extra for their “service” there it’s really because of that and nothing more.

As someone who worked with Hy-Vee years ago, I can conquer that Randy and the rest of the leadership team at Hy-Vee is awful.

Do you guys think if HyVee was a public company Randy would be able to keep his job after all of his pet projects that failed. The crazy thing about Randy is he will do a test market for his new idea and even thou they fail he will force the entire company run with it. Not his fault the idea doesn’t make money because his the idea guy not the make money guy.

In regards to the layoffs, it was obvious they targeted people who were "thorns in their sides." They were the boots on the ground who didn't say yes to everything, had their own opinions and fought for doing things in a sane way.

Everyone in middle management who said "yes" to all of randy's ideas (that were thought about for less than 15 minutes) is an accomplice. This falls on you for not doing your job. There was so much money spent on Randy's pet projects. Many people tried to tell you these were bad ideas, but no one listened. No one would listen because the culture of fear that has built Hy-Vee. No one is willing to stand up for what is right. Now that all of these projects and 3rd parties were funded, your employees paid the price.

Hy-Vee is a culture built on fear and golden handcuffs. Data is never used when making a decisions, Hy-Vee doesn't believe in listening to their customers and they don't value talent and intelligence. The board is filled with ex Hy-Vee folks who don't have modern business or technology experience, nor hold anyone in leadership accountable.

The best thing that could happen to Hy-Vee at this point is to sell or go public. Look what happened to Caseys. Casey's went public hired smart people from outside of their company, and now they are attracting and retaining other smart people who will carry Casey's forward.

Turn over the entire leadership team and stop investing in outside celebrities to sell groceries to people in the midwest.

I find it funny how, after every layoff or restructuring, Hy-Vee has some corporate shills posting on here trying to call people out. We see you. We know what you’re doing and it does t work, chumps.

Randy can retire now. He finally got the huge state tax cut on retirement benefits that has been the company's #1 legislative priority for years. At the Statehouse, it was nicknamed the "Hy-Vee bill."

The question of the day is. Will Randy retire or will he run HyVee into bankruptcy first?

Some of the people on this thread have perfected the art of whining. If that's all you did at work, maybe that's why you're no longer there. Just a theory.

That's what happens when the CEO has severe, untreated ADHD -- "ooh, look, a squirrel! Let's chase it!" He stays up half the night trolling the internet for other people's ideas to pass off as his own.

Didn’t they just have a big event at the corporate office the other weekend, complete with multiple spotlights and limousines? Money for that but not for keeping workers employed, I guess.

If you need any evidence that Randy is a douchebag there was a point where he had the Imperial march play whenever he would enter the grimes office. Maybe a bit too on the nose imo.

Nearly 600 workers in Kansas City, Missouri, more than 300 in the Twin City suburb of Eagan, Minnesota, and nearly 370 in Urbandale.

Not surprised at all…. How has no one noticed how many long time, dedicated employees have up and left!? After 20+ years of employment!! Why? Because Randy is terrible. Quite honestly, so are his robot supervisors and store directors. None of them give a cr-p about anything but their own pockets and shame on the board for not noticing and doing something before it has come to this! Des Moines register, you want a story!? I’ve got at-least 5 for ya!

Reporters do not forget Randy is a deep republican. He is blaming everything on Joe Biden rather than his own failures. He says he is a independent, but he only spoke about how great Trump was while bashing Democrats and Biden.

Randy somehow forgot about the wall the Trump administration put up around the White House prior to the insurrection. On a Monday Huddle call a few weeks ago he said a wall around the White House had never happened before and it was just Biden’s failure as president.

Randy is a liar, narcissistic, and extremely egotistical all because he was Ron Pearson’s pocket boy.

What's most depressing about this round of layoffs is it's quite clear that it's self-inflicted. They reported and boasted about record-breaking revenue and profit during the pandemic. Blaming future macroeconomic shortfalls really isn't acceptable

These layoffs are a direct result of over-extending themselves with new ventures; AislesOnline, failed restaurants, hip gas stations, random shoe stores next to the candy aisle, or pushing weird partnerships with B list celebrities.

It's one thing to try to be innovative but doing so at the expense of loyal employees, that you eventually treated like cattle, is completely inappropriate.

The real story here is how Randy is leading this company into the ground. Since Randy has been around he has had to layoff of people every few years. It’s been a running joke that if you don’t agree with randy on everything you will be fired. Randy has failed this company and he is blaming everyone around him now. Randy is the type of guy that won’t take responsibility for his own failures and now the employees are paying the price. James please investigate Randy the CEO of HyVee.

Hello!

I am a reporter at KCCI in Des Moines working on a follow-up story to our story about this last night. I have spoken to a few employees, but am looking to talk with more.

I understand this may be difficult to talk about, though it is certainly important. If you'd like to chat, send me an email-- James.Stratton@hearst.com, or give me a call 515-247-8846. Thanks.

Damn. I applied for the Content Creator position at corporate at the end of February but by the way it looks I'm sure they have totally eliminated that position all together. The last couple of months they had so many job openings in marketing trying to beef up social media and video production. I wonder how many of those people have only worked there a few months just be let go.

What a sh-t show of a company this has become. I remember everyone having great respect foe the employees that worked at Hy-Vee. They expected a lot of you but didn't pull this.

I was brought on in January, then was informed that my position was “no longer necessary”. Made it all of two months before they decided that I guess. I was let go on a Zoom call, and before I could even make a phone call I was being ushered out the front door. My badge didn’t even work by the time I got there. Great treatment by company that prides itself on how well they treat their employees.

Do the "IT" layoffs include the Grimes facility?

FWIW - there might be reason for Hy-Vee to be concerned with Fareway lately; they're actually marketing their particular strengths, expanding their grocery lines to consumer tastes (i.e. it's not a time warp to the 1950s anymore) and implementing the exact same technology Hy-Vee has in place (even the self-checkout vendors are the same people, with the same voice) without all of the extra fluff / overhead that Hy-Vee has introduced throughout the chain in the last 20 years.

My dad was let go yesterday, after 12+ years with the company. He's broken and since he's close to retirement it'll be hard to find someting comparable. I also heard it was about 200 people in the corporate.

It has been in waves. Some have been 1:1 while others have been in a group setting in person or via zoom. Newly hired people who have been with the company for weeks are being let go with the excuse of downsizing. These people decided to start fresh with a company that is striving to be the best place to work in America only to be back to termed with no notice. Paid out any vacation balance if they have any and benefits ending immediately.
