What is a merchandise captain? In my store no one mention about this position to any members of the merchandise team. So they put a sales captain in that position. Why didn’t they ask the the old leads if they wanted this position.

I also heard about this new Merchandise Captain job - overseeing the merchandising throughout the entire store.
Not sure what the big wigs are expecting from these Captains, though. I heard a Visual Captain say his job was to just manage, not actually do the visual. Apparently, the sales managers and associates are expected to pick-up a lot of the visual workload.
It's the style crew.
There is going to be a new Captain position but I don’t know the exact title of it. There will also be a couple of other new positions for the sales floor also.
My store still has support captains. Everyone’s title is still the same. Selling and support.
There’s no support captains going forward other than receiving and fulfillment
Progression Plan ??? What is that ? They could care less about us.
I guess that is part of Gannett’s
$5,000,000,000 dollar political statement he made last week.😂🤣
Waiting to see what the receiving captain does. My store was able to keep the RTM last year. Now my boss is probably gone the end of June if not sooner.
Just proof that good people are just numbers and they really don’t matter to Macys.
Never heard of that position. As far as I know …there are selling floor captains…fufillment captains, visual captains , receiving captains, at your service captains…
Yes, go to the stores unannounced. They’re always planning like crazy for visits beforehand. Come see what the stores are truly like and how bad most management are.
What you describe is how ethical companies operate. Macy’s on the other hand is a whole other world. I am sure there are some stores that operate fairly but the store I work at is the most unethical and toxic environment I have ever experienced.
Why do you think people leave in a few months weeks and even days ?
You need to leave your cushy office once in a while and go to the stores unannounced and witness what goes on.
Your policies look good on paper but the actual store environment is the complete opposite. Yes this sounds callous but it is the truth and senior management should fix it.
As expected. There is no script, just trying to give folks on here the facts. As far as not posting roles, we do have succession planning in place. We have action plans from within the store and at times have set plans for who deserves to move into larger roles. Not sure why this would be an issue. If someone works hard and deserves career progression, would think that they would be able to get what they have worked for. Am certain you would want the same respect if in fact you were the one in that same spot. Trust me, whoever works hard and gets results will have opportunities to move forward. It is not about favorites. But again, I know this commentary will not be welcomed. Sadly these are the facts though.
That is funny. It may be true about captain positions because it is company wide.
Why then are internal jobs filled without being posted ? This happens all the time. Our store manager fills jobs with his favorites and does not give the opportunity to others in the store.
Why are all the managers that are hired under the age of forty ?
You certainly did rehearse your script very well.
To the last poster, it is not about friends and favorites. The other poster was correct, if there was a selling captain and the role went away, you would have to place them in the open merch. captain role...wouldn't have a choice good, bad, or indifferent. Stores are held to processes like this on almost every type of colleague issue. We cannot just decide to overrule a process. If two people are in the same standing (two selling captains displaced), then you could possibly pick the one you felt better about, but not if they made us go with seniority (which is usually the case). There are far more rules than you would think. I know the naysayers on this page will ridicule my statement, but can't help posting accurate information.
This is typical of Macy’s they put their friends and favorites into positions with no regard or consideration of more experienced people.
If they replaced all the older people with a young person it is age discrimination which Macy’s is known for.
Comrade Colleagues,
If the Russkies invade the USA there will be more Macy's jobs for High School Grads 21 years of age and older (must sell/drink Vodka). After 9 years you can be a Smerchandise Captain!
Zdravstvuy Kapitan!
Captain jobs get standardized across all doors with the new pilot program. You are now told what kind of captain jobs you will have, it's not store manager choice any longer. If you aren't on the new program yet, it will become clear when you do go on it.
They probably lost a sales captain job in your store and moved that employee into the merch captain position so they didn't loose their job. Or your store leadership didn't like anyone on your support team or think anyone was capable of doing the merch job so they moved the sales captain into it instead.
Maybe some stores have those and others don't? We have an open position for a selling captain.
At our store we have a merchandise captain. We went from 3 merchandise leads to one captain for a 70m store.
