Thread regarding Fidelity Investments layoffs

Mediocrity

I’m not saying I’m the best employee ever, but it’s noticeable that Fido is slowly becoming a place for mediocrity. There are more and more mediocrities here who could never get a job here in the past. What's the problem? It’s amazing to me that leadership is blind to the hidden costs of mediocre employees.

Managers don't care if they have mediocrity on their team as long as the work gets done. Pace over perfection, the buyout and strictly hiring for diversity vs the best person for the job has all added to mediocrity we are seeing. My advice is to either get out now or strap yourself in, max out the 401k and take the first VBO you are offered.

Stodgy with current employee work culture (e.g. WFH and productivity). Not presently competitive with pay/benefits especially if you get demanded to RTO.

You get what you pay for. They can no longer keep up with top tier comp, so they are left with mediocrity. Those who are good will or have left for better . . .

A lot of people are probably leaving for places that are actually adapting to the times, allowing for full or more work for I’m home. Fidelity isn’t adapting at all.

Amen! Damn rights as TB sr said. This is also true for those who run the Risk areas. Business Risk sits to the side and then plays Monday Morning QB on any tech issues. SVP Risk Oversight leaders are the worst at this. They don’t even know why you would put a header and trailer on a simple job to ensure completeness. Totally absolutely useless.

Look at L1 and L2s under Abby and judge for yourself. I don't see any innovation or courage or a breath of fresh air. Save for joanna. Even she recently said we are 'a tech company'. Oh really? How many of L1/L2 are technologists who can code? We really need to stop comparing ourselves to the tech companies and leaders who continue to push that trope are just passing the buck of all problems to technology and not taking any ownership. If we really are a tech company, we would be making strategy decisions based on data. Not rules of thumb driven by gut feelings of antiquated MBAs.

if it's not tik tok or instagram...then the young don't understand technology.

Why do you say old and white are mediocre? In your view I would probably fit into the demographics that you cite. However I think it is wrong on your part to lump us into a group of mediocre workers. Personally I am not afraid of technology change, etc as you suggest. In the future please be careful of making broad statements as you did in your post.

All the mediocre people I’ve seen in leadership are (mostly) old and white. They’re the same folks making snide comments about diversity on this board. Drummer Kruger Effect.

I think part of the reason is technology is becoming more central to the work, and there’s a lot more ambiguity and fast change in business nowadays compared to the past. Incompetent people struggle more with change and ambiguity.

I’m not sure what Fidelity can do except do a better job of recognizing good talent and placing competent people in leadership. They struggle with the old bats who’ve paid their dues and want to become squad lead etc but who are sh-t at their jobs and slow everything down and scare away talent.

hey all you 'diverse' people, I want to 'include' you in the fire's that we're fighting.

Fidelity is ridiculous. Our mantras are “pace over perfection” , “vitality” and diversity/inclusion over anything else. Quality is in the toilet, the majority of our expertise is gone, and we’re left with kids who aren’t qualified for their job. Management is only capable of regurgitating the woke agenda, while kids fight fires. Fid could layoff 60% and have zero impact.

what's the problem??? The talent left in the buyout and the hiring is based on diversity and not talent. Not saying diversity is bad, it is good, but when it becomes the prime factor for hiring and not hiring the best individual, whether diverse or not, then you leave yourself open to mediocrity. Managers should interview with blindfolders and then upon hire, take the blindfold off to see what the candidate looks like.
