Thread regarding Union Pacific Corp. layoffs

UP one of the world's "most admired companies"?

UP put out a press release saying they are one of the "world's most admired companies". This is based on a list Fortune magazine releases every year based on a survey from corporate executives not the general public. If you are looking at this list and expecting them to be in the top 10 or even top 100 based on UP's press release, you will be disappointed. You will find they are #333 on the list. They're not even #1 in their own industry. I think Alaska is one of my favorite states. In fact, I'd put it in the top 50.

I had to laugh at the article the UP put out. I'm still lost as to why they even bothered with it. If they graded 350 companies on desirability and the UP came in at 333, then I wouldn't really call that a win. There 332 other companies that are more desirable than the UP. It's like auto racing. Who brags about almost coming in dead last?

This is a fortune magazine ranking and has nothing to do with Forbes, glassdoor, or financial institutions.

Given their ranking, it is embarrassing UP bothered to make a press release at all. They're not in the top 50. Anything above 50 just shows in alphabetical order. That's why UP is so far down on the list. It's a cheesy gold star for companies to put in press releases.

Fortune magazine comes up with these rankings to make money and get companies to place ads. UP and all other major companies make this most admired list every year. It means nothing good or bad. Everybody is on it.

No, there is admiration from financial institutions. This has nothing to do with the fact the majority of the employees are unhappy with the company. These institutions don’t care if you are happy or not, they only care about profits. The union employees look at the Glassdoor ratings and talk about how awful UP is. The stockholders and investors look at things like the Forbes ratings and talk about what a great company UP is. It’s all relative to your position and opinion. Rich people generally don’t care how they become rich, only that they stay that way. The large investors don’t personally know any of us and don’t care about us at all. We are nothing to them, we are just numbers waiting to be downsized.

There is no admiration. There is a preselected list of major companies on the survey sent out and executives that participate rank them accordingly. If you rank #333 on the list here's your participation trophy.

The admiration is all about profits, stock prices and dividends, and shareholder value. Too many employees are caught up in the Glassdoor stuff and can’t understand how UP is rated highly by Forbes and others. When Financial institutions rate companies they don’t consider employee job satisfaction or morale. UP is very profitable and Wall Street likes the moves the company has made. This doesn’t mean it’s a great place to work, but does mean that investors are generally happy about how the company is ran. Investors and financial analysts don’t care at all about the Glassdoor ratings, they only care about maximizing their investment.

Other corporate execs admire UP's ability to exploit their workers.
