Thread regarding Enbridge Inc. layoffs

I'm not sure what's the point anymore

I have no incentive to work hard anymore. I've lost all of my motivation the day I saw a brown noser who does nothing all day get promoted over several people who have been working hard the whole year with zero recognition. Apparently, to advance your career it's more important to kiss the right bu-t than work hard. So why bother?

Save your time and don’t waste your life at this company. You don’t want to be there longer than a few years. It’s a dysfunctional and racist place! Move on.

Take pride in your work no matter what it is or where you work, at all times

Bottom line: Being a top performer will likely do nothing for you over and above a slacker. In fact, you will likely get laid off before the slacker. At the end of the day, you will regret your solid work ethic, rather than hold your head high when they say "so long, su---r".

I stopped caring about work years ago for the same reason. Now I just do my 8 hour day, close my laptop and idc.

Nobody owes anybody anything. Enbridge doesn't owe you, you don't owe Enbridge. Your relationship is pay as you go. They pay you well, you should do good work.

It's not complicated.

I work with two guys who are like the people posting below who have the mindset of "shut up or quit." They are dream employees for a big company like ours. Totally subservient, believing they owe Enbridge a debt of gratitude for working here. A.M. could tell one of the guys to jump off the Calgary Tower and he likely would LOL.

I think its going to be interesting in the next decade or so with the younger generation. They have no problem challenging the status quo and will advocate for workers rights. The old school "shut up or quit if you don't like things" won't fly with them.

Advocating for more respect, more pay, more recognition, more flexibility, etc, IS A GOOD THING!

You don't need to leave your job to do this.. but quitting for a job where you are treated better hits Enbridge in the only way they will feel it. $$$

If Enbridge is not a happy place for you, then please do yourself a favor and leave. You are likely a wonderful, hard-working and talented person. If you feel this way yet you stay, then things probably won’t get better for you. It will probably get worse and on the way down you will make those of us who are in a happy place start seeing you as a selfish, lazy hack who only stays for a pay check.

"Societies function on reciprocity."

False. NA Capitalism functions on extracting as much value from resources as possible to maximize profits. Employees are a resource to companies. Their goal is to maximize the value that you deliver to the company. Full stop. They don't care about you, they care about the money you generate.

If you won't admit this you're not to blame. The indoctrination of working class people to accept this as normal has been pervasive and very successful.

How is that upvoted? Societies function on reciprocity. What a terrible mindset. The employer/employee relationship isn't inherently antagonistic unless you make it so. I can't imagine feeling like a waste of space for half my waking life. Good luck with that.

Face it, your relationship with Enbridge is purely transactional. You sell them hours of your life and they give you money. End of story. If at any time Enbridge feels that they can continue on without you, you are gone. Treated with dignity and respect as you are walked out the door, of course. Nothing wrong with this arrangement, many marriages have less. Just don't expect Enbridge to care about you, and you should not care about Enbridge, other than fulfilling your duties and collecting your check. And this holds true not just for Enbridge, but virtually all companies that have had merciless layoffs over the years. It just is what it is.

Work ethic is BS. It's a fairy tale word used by those in power to guilt you into working harder for nothing.

Being a good person does not entail working more/harder than required by your contract or job description you agreed to.

Work just as hard as it takes to keep your paycheck coming in, any more than this and you're giving the 1% free money, at the cost of your physical and mental energy.

"Why bother just doing the min required and coast it until the retirement day.
Thanks Enbridge for giving me this work ethic."

Make no mistake. Enbridge didn't give you that work ethic. You had it when you arrived.

Enbridge pays you enough that in order to not be the poor contributor in the relationship, you should provide good work. To choose to do less is the very definition of "poor work ethics". To revel in it means Enbridge gambled and lost on you, and no matter what job you went to next, the same would be true.

The point isn't that we CAN'T strive for more, the point is that there is no point.

Job hopping is stressful. Being a manager is stressful. So why try hard if nothing comes from it? Why not coast and do the bare minimum? If the sole motivation to perform well in your CURRENT role is to maybe become a manager someday? Yeah.. I can't blame you for giving up and putting in minimum effort.

This system is broken, Enbridge is no exception.

My entire department feels the same way. We know we are all getting axed at some point, we just don't know when. It's not a good feeling. Everyone tries to be optimistic, but we are all worried for our families.

I agree with the fact most of this is jealousy. There is room for only so many middle managers. So when that happens, not much you can do about it. If you don;t like that then leave and use your talents to get a senior job with another company.

In exchange for working hard, you get to have a pretty good job. Enbridge pays at or above national rate for all positions. Making profits is what it is all about in the end for a publicly traded company. No profits, no investors, no company, no job.

Maybe this is not the place for you.

There are already too many middle managers. Not everyone can be a manager, therefore it is not logical for everyone to strive to be promoted to 'managers'.

Workers are beginning to understand that for most, working harder translates to added profit for the company and literally NO benefit for the worker.

Working hard benefits nobody except c-suite and large shareholders ($1 MM+). Save yourself, save your body, save your mental health, don't work hard for nothing.

Ki-l yourself for what maybe $1500 before pay deductible taxes on Stip and same % pay increase as the dogger boy gets. I’ve tried in past over extending doing whatever needed. Missing family events.
No thanks I’m done trying anymore.
Why bother just doing the min required and coast it until the retirement day.
Thanks Enbridge for giving me this work ethic.

Heard this story so many times. Nothing but whining that they don't get ahead. I have heard it about me through all my promotions. I know I worked hard and earned everything i have obtained. But there will always be jealousy in the work place. Just cause someone gets ahead does not mean they brown nose. How bout they are just friendly with everyone and get along with everyone no matter what their position is.

I have a suggestion for you. Stop whining about others and look at yourself. Put your head down and work hard. Have yourself known for that and not a whining jealous person who can never recognize hard work.

The company would be much better without you and others like you.

This phenomenon is not unique to ENB. This happens everywhere. Lay flat. Work just enough to not get fired. 110% gets you nothing other than worse health, worse mental health and less free time.

Nepotism isn't going anywhere, this will continue to happen for a long time. Don't work hard for nothing, people.
