Thread regarding Cengage layoffs

Good places to apply

Where are you applying? I know many are looking for a new job right now, including me, but the situation with the job market doesn't seem as good as I was led to believe. It's not that there are no jobs, it's that nothing pays well enough to warrant a change. I know lots of people have left already, any ideas where some of them landed?

So true. Management here are the losers who run around telling all their friends and family that they "are in management for a tech company."

Managers at cengage are some of the lowest IQ sycophants known to mankind. They're clueless about the market, clueless about the real culture at cengage and clueless how much we all sincerely loathe them.

"My Manager seems to think you would have to leave Cengage and wait six months before going to another publisher."

Sounds about right for Cengage management, lol.

There isn't a clause that prevents someone in sales from going to another publisher? My Manager seems to think you would have to leave Cengage and wait six months before going to another publisher.

This is the opposite of what I'm experiencing. Jobs a step below my current position are paying 10-15k more than my current position at Cengage.

It boils down to your experience and skillset.

If you have transferable skills you can easily make more money outside of Cengage and publishing in general. Software developers, salespeople, product managers and people who work in specific business disciplines have many options.

If your job is specific to publishing (i.e. content development, editorial)...good luck.

Does anyone in sales make bonuses anymore? I don't know why motivated people are willing to work in such an uninspiring and unmotivated place. I guess its a bit of Stockholm Syndrome for some. Others would be forced to start at the bottom and actually work.

Its such an interesting psychological thing. Professionals are intrinsically motivated to excel and there is no opportunity to do that at Cengage.

Tons of sales jobs out there that pay well. Better than this place. I am just waiting for the day when I show to the office in Independence and the guard says the whole place is shut down, no notice other than that. I feel like it could happen any day now.

Lots of jobs in logistics that require you to work. It was a hard choice for me to switch from a job where I basically did nothing every day to a job that required me to work daily. A receiving manager at a warehouse pays double what I made at Cengage. I guess it’s not hard to double a base of 34,000.
