Is it worth hiring on in these locations as a conductor? Anyone know if it’s busy and if there is anyone laid off right now?

Don't make the mistake of going to North Platte. Its a pit ho-e town, has been for many years, there is no housing, no shopping, no child care if you have a family. Personally, you can do better away from Nebraska. But, if the spirit moves you, go ahead. I guarentee it will be your biggest mistake ever.
I appreciate the information. Thank you.
North Platte currently has borrow outs from Chicago. No layoffs happening any time soon. The bad news is you will be on a yard extra board on call 24/7 365 for a few years most likely. You can make $75k on that board easily, more if you want to stay marked up all the time. North Platte and Council Bluffs are the same Zone 100 so your seniority will determine which location you work.
If you have to ask questions about whether or not to apply or who is laid off, then you really should look elsewhere for employment.
Busy ?? Oh youll be busy alright . Busy on lookin over your shoulders to see whos gonna back stab you. Any one laid off right now ?? You will be laid off when you get your "essential training" done.
If you hire out in Council Bluffs you will more than likely go to North Platte for many years. North Platte NE. Is considered one one of the worst places to work in the system due to its proximity to bigger cities and high cost of living and high taxes. Council Bluffs is bad due to proximity to HQ this is the arm pit in my opinion. I have worked in many places on the system and I know that it takes 14 or more years to hold good paying road jobs in C.B. You will work the yard for many years after returning from you years in North Platte. Also in both of these locations you will have to fight for your pay constantly because pay agreements are always violated due to shady timekeeping practices. Go somewhere else on the system is my advice to you OP.
I don't see an issue with hiring on at those locations if you don't mind being close to the source of all problems at the UP. Good luck
