Thread regarding Qualcomm Inc. layoffs

Is my TC OK? Staff engineer in hardware, Qcom non-core team...

I have been given 4/5 in recent two anual reviews, yet I got only 4.4% bump in base this year... SAME RSU as last year...

I am NOT in a core team like CPU, GPU, nuvia, rffe, modem

Here are the stats:
YOE: phD + 3 yrs in EDA + 4 yrs in Qcom
TC: 157k base, 55k RSU, 20k bonus

  • Also $25K each year retention bonus for 2 years

Just notified by mgmt that I am considered out-performing employee and will raise my TC, detailed to be shared in mid Jan 2022, but I might get an Facebook offer from FRL 1 week before that.

FRL said if I choose to stay at SD and the team accepts ( might have to travel a few times to bay area each month), they will pay me on Bay Area, but I have to pay for travel expenses myself.

Bottom line: I prefer to stay in San Diego, how well am I paid as a staff engineer in a non-core team ?

Any suggestion how Apple will pay based on my YOE ?

Thanks!

You do know how to Google?

Cause: “Facebook–Cambridge Analytica data scandal”
Effect: “Facebook's hiring crisis: Engineers are turning down offers, internal docs show”

I live in San Jose, you have no idea how many Palo Alto recruiters call me….

Either a commute or studio apartment rent over $3k a month.

Those poor recruiters must be in he-l.

TC is too low given you have PhD + 7yrs exp. Leave Q and join FB.

FB has to shower engineers and support staff with cash because no one wants to work for them. You won’t be working with the best. You will be working with those who are there for a paycheck.

I am on a core team:

Promoted to staff last year. This year got a 3:
Masters degree + two years prior experience, came in as sr eng.
165 base, 83k stock, 31k bonus.

With that said my spouse works for FB and makes slightly more than double what I make with a PhD. Travel from SD to Bay area is cheap as he-l so I wouldn't worry about that, hotels can be somewhat expensive so factor that in.

FB is also has sh-t teams as well, so make sure the team you'll be working for isn't bad.

I think the TC is good for SD. In Bay Area you might get 310k but HCOL.

Also, don’t take the FRL offers where you have to pay for travel expenses. Do it other way round and maybe take SD TC.

Your current TC (~$250k including R Bonus) is definitely on the low end for PhD + 7 YOE. You should vet it against someone in the core team with similar YOE/expertise, see where you stand within QCOM. FRL offers recently have been outstanding, they are on a hiring spree. I don’t think Apple would match them out of the gate, but Apple refreshers are pretty solid. Get that offer and use it to bump up FRL/vice-versa.
