Thread regarding Citrix Systems Inc. layoffs

No job guarantee

I'm not staying at a company that can't offer me minimal job security. I understand layoffs are sometimes necessary, but having to worry about being cut 24/7 is ridiculous. I can't understand young people who keep accepting jobs here. Do they not care that they might be cut within a month or two of joining?

Why would young people straight out of college want to work at Citrix? Because Citrix recruits heavily out of college, and might as well be throwing gold bars at their feet.

They have a program where they cross-train these college recruits in several different areas, spending 3-6 months in each area. Spend some time in a Sales oriented role, Support, Project Management, etc. It's a really good way to earn some great job skills right out of college. At the end, they are supposed to pick what area they want to stay with at Citrix

The problem is Citrix pays these kids 60-80k right out of college, puts them up in corporate housing, and a lot of times gives them a company paid car (or car shared between several of them).

And you know what happens...80% of them bank the pay with no living expenses and a free car at their disposal, suck up the experience, and leave for another company. There's nothing to hold them to staying at Citrix, so most don't.

If you're looking for job security, you won't find it anywhere. The key is to join a company knowing that you will be laid off at some point. Do a good job, but don't ki-l yourself, because once you leave, nothing you did at that company will matter anymore (working harder does NOT increase your job security). Save money and keep your interview skills sharp, so when the layoffs happen, it won't be the end of the world.

The “young people” will find jobs easily in this hot job market, if they do get cut. It’s the long-timers with rusty skills, used to the slow, meandering pace of Citrix who have more cause for worry.
Young peeps will be fine.
