I have a friend who is currently facing this problem, he can't find a better job because his skills are outdated. Has it happened to anyone else that looking for a new job revealed how much your skills have actually atrophied here? Obviously most of us will at some point have to deal with updating our skills.

Not really hard. The cloud guys really love the Teradata knowledge I had and were falling over themselves in making offers. They will pay higher for teradata skills especially in the enterprise space
If you want to update your skills, fins a new employer. Teradata has been leveraging a 45 hear-old technology (the bynet.) All development since then has focused on incremental improvements, hardly an environment that fosters skill development.
