Thread regarding Union Pacific Corp. layoffs

Unpopular opinion, but true

Why would you think the company cares about anything other than making money. The company is very profitable, and this is not debatable. Once the PSR has ran its course, there will be another downsizing plan. You can bet this is being planned already. With advances in technology and the companies singular focus on downsizing and leaning out the company, you will be lucky to have half the employees that are currently working in the next 10 years. It sucks, but this is going to happen to a lot of companies.

I pulled this from +1eoWFvfT I understand why this post has downwotes, but this is unfortunately true. Those who think otherwise generally have no arguments.

@1mri No I think you missed the point the other poster was stating. The other poster never stated that companies won't go with automation. The point I saw in that post was about the severe downturn in available jobs after the automation. I used to build those automated conveyor lines before I went to the RR, so trust me when I tell you that full automation has some significant disadvantages and is far from just plug and play. You stated that the younger generation should be prepared for this to happen. OK HOW DO THEY PREPARE FOR A CAREER THAT MIGHT NOT BE AVAILABLE ANYMORE? Did you get the point now? If many of these jobs go away, then what do people do for an income? I don't see a huge majority of late 40's or mid 50's people going back to college to get another degree for a job that has very few or no openings. Just because we have the technology or means to go full automation, DOESN'T MEAN WE SHOULD! How do people buy things if they don't have an adequate income??

They just had a good test run with universal basic income during covid.

Can’t imagine the chaos if half or more of the current population were without incomes. It would be bad for those who have the wealth because they would be outnumbered by those without. Think back to this last year and how the younger generations fight for what they think is right. Now imagine all of those folks without income because of corporate greed. They will not stand down I believe and those with the money will be forced to give much of it back to those displaced to keep the peace IMO.

@1bgk, the changes have been happening for awhile now and will increase in the future. If you don’t think companies are salivating for automation you are wrong. Go to YouTube and look at videos of automobile plants in the 70s and 80 s versus now. What is the difference? Robotics are doing much of the welding and assembly now that was manual labor in the past. Warehousing is going the same route with computerized forklifts and robotics. There is a good example video of this in a coke cola warehouse. It previously employed over 250 workers, and now has 10. I was not saying that everyone should get a degree in computers, this was just an example and I thought everyone would realize that. I was just saying to be as prepared as possible for changes in the workforce that will no doubt take place. I wasn’t saying there will not be jobs in the future, but that they will be a different type of jobs than now.

@1bgk I agree with you statement entirely. No one can plan for anything at this point. The younger generation has a lot to deal with if they want to make it. The corporate world is obsessed with money. They don't give a damn about the workers that made them their millions. I'd like to see the corporate world have a logical discussion about the future profits, when no one has the money to buy the things that are made by the robots that they so badly wanted. That should be an interesting conversation.

OK so if companies go with unmanned operations, then what do people do for money to buy the things that are now being made by the machines that took their job? Not everyone has a double bachelor's degree in computer programming, or a degree in medicine. If you think that a lot of jobs will still be available after a mass automation push, then you are very wrong. Look at how things are progressing now in the automotive industry. Everyone is jumping on the electric bandwagon, but very little effort has been given on the electrical grids that have to support it. How many companies do you think will keep people around when the executives can figure out ways to eliminate jobs in favor of automation? What about the shortages that we have now? How are those being addressed? What about the chip shortages? The same chips that run those said computers, are the same chips that companies are having a difficult time getting now. I could go on for a while about this and explain the cons of going full automation. Automation is a great thing, but there are very big consequences of doing so. How does the younger generation prepare for a future that solely based on speculative opinions. You said it yourself that many jobs will be reduced or eliminated due to automation right? Should the younger generation just get a degree in everything, and wait to see what type of job is available? The time frame of 10 years changed to 10 plus years. So which is it? Is it within the next ten years as previously stated, or is it more than ten years like was stated now? Try researching the automation idea, look at how well it can help our daily, and look very closely how badly it can go if we get it wrong. Just an idea for you

Everyone will eventually be replaced by technology, we're just playing the game.
Half the current governments job is to slow the growth of technology for this very reason.

I am the one that posted this in another thread. Unfortunately with technological advances in artificial intelligence, robotics, and machine learning, many companies will be able to drastically downsize in the next 10
plus years. Workers, especially younger individuals should prepare for this now. There will be fewer and fewer manufacturing and labor positions available. Warehousing and transportation positions will be especially hard hit by these changes. Computers, programming, health care, etc., all should still be available, but many other jobs will either go away or be reduced. It’s better to be ready for something like this to happen than to blindly wait for it.
