CVS Pharmacy in Metuchen to close next week

METUCHEN – Boyt Dr-gs, the longtime pharmacy on Main Street, may soon be the only dr-gstore in town.

That's because the CVS Pharmacy, 45 Pearl St., which has only been in business for a few years, is slated to close Dec. 28.

“All prescriptions will be seamlessly transferred to the nearby CVS Pharmacy at 913 Oak Tree Ave. in South Plainfield, which is less than 4 miles away, ensuring that pharmacy customers continue to have uninterrupted access to service," the company said in a statement.

CVS last month announced plans to close about 900 stores, 300 per year, over the next three years, reflecting nearly 1 in 10 of its locations, as the dr-gstore chain continues its pivot away from retail and toward health care services. At list of the locations poised to close was not immediately available.

CVS Pharmacy recently opened a store at 1204 Park Ave. in Plainfield, not far from the South Plainfield location.

"This planned revision of our bricks and mortar footprint reflects an evolution of our presence in the community that is based on the current health needs and shopping habits of consumers, which have shifted following the COIVD-19 pandemic," according to CVS’ statement.

CVS said last month the store closures would begin in spring 2022.

Metuchen Mayor Jonathan Busch said he’s grateful for how loyal the community has been to Boyt Dr-gs, 411 Main St.

"We're incredibly proud of Boyt and its commitment to the residents of Metuchen," the mayor said.

What will happen to that building? CVS rebuilt it almost entirely when it opened two years ago. Will Walgreens move in?
You could tell it was underperforming--the shelves were often half empty, but still, it was convenient during the worst of Covid.

It appears that the closings are already happening. So much for "spring 2022". Keep your eyes and ears open everyone!
