I don't know of any manager here who is great to work with

Purely out of curiosity, I wonder if there is a manager at UP who is not bully and who actually does a great job?

Judging by what my manager is like and judging by other people’s stories, there doesn’t seem to be a manager here for whom employees could honestly say a few nice words.

I work in a major shop and the managers who came up through the craft are decent people with an understanding of what is necessary to get the job done. The ones off the street or who didn't spend much time in the craft aren't jerks, but they definitely are clueless and need someone to hold their hand. None of them are bad people though. I feel bad for those of you who have managers that are ignorant and constantly trying to get you in trouble for no good reason. I feel even sorrier for those managers. What a miserable existence they must live.

Not every manager is a bad manager. Been here 10 years. Yes I've had some pieces of sh-t mangers in my time. But also had some good ones. Can't lable them ALL bad. Gotta remember that our front line managers answer to someone higher than them.

@OP Since most managers who stay in job longer than year are FMTs who crossed over from agreement, what does your statement imply about the candidate pool?

Hint: don’t think too hard about it; just go with the obvious.

@1ulv I wouldn’t compare management at UP to “like everything else in life”. UP has been voted worst company to work for in consecutive years. Glassdoor ratings prove that management at UP is not “like everything else in life.” You’re making a big error in judgment.

OP is right. Every manager I’ve had at UP has been a joke. My managers usually ask me for advice unless it’s during a “courage to care” or “serve and grow” meeting. Managers don’t know how to do their job, but they attempt to promote the UP propaganda.

You can’t say any one group is all bad. I have worked for UP for 25 years and have seen pretty much every type of manager. I have had a couple of very good managers and a couple of bad ones, and one terrible one. It’s the same with any group. There are great engineers and conductors and lousy ones also. There are people on every board that others don’t like working with. I don’t like the executive team, but some of the local managers are fine to work with. This is the same in life. You probably have some great neighbors and maybe some that you hate. It’s all about perspective.
