I'm referring to smaller companies here, with only a few hundred employees, not major acquisitions? What are the chances we'll be here only for a year or two before being let go? I'm just trying to figure out how safe my future is here and if I need to start preparing right now to be cut sometime in the not-so-distant future.

No one is safe in Cognizant.. once you are out of billable role you have 35 days to find some billable project your own. Talent Supply Chain and your practice is joke, they will never find project for you. The only you can get project is through your own contacts else be ready to exit the company on 35th day.. after 30th day they will assume you are not able to find project and initiate separation process.
Run. Nothing worth staying for. Dealing with offshore is a nightmare
