Thread regarding Union Pacific Corp. layoffs

It is very difficult to explain

I could somehow understand it all if UP wasn't doing well financially. However, why would a company that is doing very well financially treat its employees the way UP does? Such greed is impossible to comprehend.

The execs are out of touch with us common folk. They think being "woke" is being in touch, but it's not...it's just stupidity.

Railroads have never forced experimental vaccines in their employees. Railroads were founded by men but are now run by cowards.

Railroads have always been this way. Stop crying and leave.

At least the goal is 0 emissions by 2050 that should make everyone feel better lol! This will probably be the reason we aren’t going to get pay raises is because the company is purchasing electric locomotives that will need coal powered electricity to make the wheels turn.

UP is doing very well financially. They make billions each year and Wall Street loves them. They went the PSR route like most other railroads thinking it would cut costs over time. Treating the employees badly has nothing to do with finances. How an organization treats its employees speaks to Corporate culture and what the executives feel is important. It is obvious the employees of UP are not valued by upper management or the board of directors. We are just a commodity, a tool to be used to attain their goals. The company has zero emotional attachment to you and you should have no emotional attachment to it. We must realize this is a job, nothing more. UP is not out family and never was.

Have you seen their actual revenues at all? Their year over year revenue went down 10% in 2020. If you look at the UP revenue history, then you would've seen that it has gone down and not up. I don't see the revenue drop as a sign of doing well financially.

@OP It’s a form of class warfare. Jay Gould had quite a bit to say about it, and UP appears to be borrowing from his playbook. Read up on him if you want to understand what UP is doing and why.

Treating employees badly is something they've done for a long time. Anyone that has worked there can tell about the level of fear that management wants to have to supposedly keep people "obedient". The question of "how would a company that's doing that's doing very well financially, treat it's employees the way UP does" isn't the right question. The real question of how much money was saved versus money spent on all of their cost saving measures? The CEO had a target of 500 million in cost savings a year. Did they ever achieve that goal? How come we don't hear about the actual savings? The UP had the warning signs of what was to come if they went the PSR route. The UP wasn't the most perfect place to work, but some folks were ok with being there. Now, people are actively leaving or looking elsewhere for work just to get away from the UP. The threat of being furloughed or fear of being fired isn't scaring people anymore. The UP was made aware of the consequences of PSR and this management. Customers are pi---d, employees are quitting daily, hiring difficulties are obvious, constant threats from yard managers, recrew counts have gone up, lack of available crews, lack of equipment, and the executives have ignored all of it. I seriously doubt that the treatment of its employees is going to improve anytime soon, or at all. Like you said, they're doing well financially, so why change anything? If the UP wants to change its image, then it needs to start at the top.

Everything is pretty good in North Platte. We are the #1 service unit for 5 years in a row and thanks to our hard work there will be no local layoffs in 2022.

It's psychological workfare. Even though they're doing great, they still have to treat you like they're doing bad. This way you never know anything but being treated like a piece of human waste. So when they get done chewing on a chicken leg and throw you the bone, you are so appreciative of your master. If they feed you a whole chicken leg you'll think that's the new normal and want a bite of their steak. And the only steak Lance wants you nibbling on is his tube steak.

Anyone hear anything about contract negotiations? Seems like it’s about time we all get a pay raise. I’m sure glad our unions gave up the COLA raises for what idk.
